Today is Bastille Day AND “Mac and Cheese Day”

For Francophile's like me - and others - it's a day to celebrate with the French people on the anniversary of their independence day. The people were tired of the king's spending when normal people were struggling. So their representatives stormed the Bastille, a prison and military fort, symbol of the monarchy. The people prevailed.

It's also "Mac and Cheese Day." We celebrated this too, by having some of that!  Smiley Happy

Re: Today is Bastille Day AND “Mac and Cheese Day”

While I was dressing this morning I sang the Marseillaise out loud all the way through, in French, to acknowledge Quatorze Juillet, or Bastille Day. No one was here to complain or compliment me.

I learned it in French class more than 60 years ago and I somehow didn't forget it. It has never "come in handy" to know like other stuff I learned back then. Perhaps because I only know the first stanza?

If only I had known it was also Mac & Cheese Day today. Instead, I took "let them eat cake" to heart.

"The people prevailed"...many of whom went on to perish in The Terror.  Google Robespierre, who richly deserved his fate.

@gizmogal - Good for you! I used to know it by heart, and sang the first verse just now after reading your post.  Smiley Happy

Actually I think the first verse was probably the only one I learned!  Smiley Wink

I've been fascinated by anything to do with France since I took French 1 in ninth grade and got my first cookbook- a French one I still use - for Christmas that year. I was lucky to be able to spend a semester there during college and learn more about France's history.

Kind of have to chuckle.  Yesterday was "Mac and Cheese Day" and the day before that, was French Fry day.  I'll be looking to see what food(s) are next.

@beach-mom

I just read online ... somewhere ... that today, July 16th, is Guinea Pig Appreciation Day.

First ... I didn't know that guinea pigs feel underappreciated.

Secondly ....  what exactly do people do to celebrate it?  LOL  Woman LOL
