Unrelated, but close to my heart, the Apollo Theater is part of my childhood. I was Daddy's girl, and my Dad loved music. Amateur Night was held on Wednesdays; he would take me (my mother and older sister were not interested) with him most weeks. I saw Jimi Hendrix as an unknown musician. Other nights at the Apollo I saw James Brown, B.B. King, The Shirelles, Dizzy Gillespie, and others I'll probably never remember (we're talking grade school memories).
The mere thought of anything closely associated to the Apollo stops me in my tracks. All those late nights hanging out, and those amazing vibes in Harlem. Thanks Dad.
To expand on the Appolla audition ... Ella was an aspiring dancer whose name was picked out of a hat that night. She became intimidated by the previous dance contestants and said "oh my gosh, what am I going to do now," (paraphrasing) and decided to sing.
The rest is history ...

Caaareful Shopper, what a phenomenal experience you had with your father! How fortunate you were.
Just recently I had occasion to speak with a musician who was with me when I and my brother (a musician) and another young woman visited the Howard Theatre (in D.C.) to witness James Brown in the early 1960s. The musician told me that he and another musician friend had seen Brown there at least 10 times. Oh my! How incredible to have that experience.
I saw Ray Charles at the Howard but Tony Bennett at the Kennedy Center. Did hear Ahmad Jamal at the Bohemian Caverns in D.C., which closed only in the last couple years.
Still, C.S., how lucky you were for your experience!
I heard Ella Fitzgerald at the University of Maryland. She performed at their then-performance arts center. Do not rmember its name.
