With everyone out Holiday shopping please be mindful of where you park.

Handicapped spaces are for those legitimately handicapped and please do not block those spaces with your car either.

I was at my local post office and saw a woman get into her pick up truck, I got her attention and I said to her: were you aware that your truck is blocking two handicapped spaces??

I had to tell her-- look to your right at the signs!!

Please don't act clueless and obey all signs in the parking lots.

Thank you.

Good for you, JJM!

What was her response?

I don't know what she was thinking as its clearly written-- handicapped parking only!! She had parked her truck across at the end of both spaces. I think she had gone into the CVS by the Post Office but she was there longer than 5 minutes as I went to the UPS Store in the same row of stores and the truck was still there.

She got flustered when I told her to look to her right.

Thank you JustJazzmom for the gentle reminder of those in need for the handicap parking spaces.   I want to add, too, that to please be aware of the ramps that lead to the sidewalk to any store entrance.  Many times drivers are oblivious to them when stopping to let someone out of their car or waiting with their vehicle running.   They block the necessary ramp for those in wheelchairs or people who have difficulty stepping up on the curb.  It saddens me to think that the only way these clueless people will come to understand that their selfish actions are hurting others is when the unfortunate day comes when they may need to apply for a handicap placard.

There are times I do feel that some stores do 'just enough' but not enough for those with disabilities.

All stores in strip malls should have curb cut outs at their entrances to their stores and not in designated areas. Large department stores should have automatic doors at ALL their entrances from the exterior and not designated doors. Heck, if the handicapped parking is on both sides of the exterior areas, why is there one automatic door that is on the other exterior door entrance from where I have parked the car?

All handicapped spaces should not just have blue stripes but the crosshatch on one side for those with wheelchairs or motorized chairs to allow discharge of their passengers/drivers.

And please don't get me started on those 'employee of the month' or 'mothers who are pregnant and with toddlers' spaces!!

Rant over.

If we don't advocate for our disabled, who will?

Thank you for this reminder.  For more than one reason, we do have handicapped plates , and they are legitimately needed.  But just last week I watched a young man in a red convertible, top down, pull into the last space, jump over the door and literally run into the store. I had to drive around for a few, waiting for someone to come out so I could park and let my husband out.  It took five or six minutes, and the door jumper was still inside.  He finally came out about 20 minutes later, with one very small bag.

Sadly, here doctors tend to give out too many temporary handicapped hangers, so there is always a shortage of spaces.

Today I watched a woman park (sort of) in a non-handicapped space right next to my car.  She parked about in the middle of two spaces, but left the back end of her car sticking out halfway across the driving lane.  I really tried to keep quiet, but just could not do it. So I quietly asked her if she realized that no one could drive through the lane until she moved forward.  She not so pollitely told me that it was none of my f****** business and that she didn't give a rats arse whether anybody could go through or not - they could d*** well choose another way out. And she disappeared into her intended store.

@JustJazzmom

As a disabled person, I really appreciate people like you who are conscious of handicapped parking spaces.

These days you really can't be too careful about confronting someone about this yourself because those kind of people obviously don't care about anyone but themselves and who knows what else they are capable of. If you see someone parked illegally, the best thing to do is take pictures or video making sure to get the make, model, color and license plate number of the car and call the police.
