There are those who have appointed themselves some parking authorities in shopping centers.  They go around and photo the person's car, VIM, and if they choose to wait, the driver themself.  They send the info to the Traffic Division and up to Sacramento - don't know how it all turns out but I am sure that the violator gets a hefty fine.  I also think, they need to appear before the judge as well.  Good.

I don't know if this is true everywhere, but the police can not ticket these people in private parking lots.   The owner/manager of the store can have them towed.  This is why many people don't worry about it.   I know I have a friend who is handicapped and I generally just let her out at the door.

Thank you for this reminder.  For more than one reason, we do have handicapped plates , and they are legitimately needed.  But just last week I watched a young man in a red convertible, top down, pull into the last space, jump over the door and literally run into the store. I had to drive around for a few, waiting for someone to come out so I could park and let my husband out.  It took five or six minutes, and the door jumper was still inside.  He finally came out about 20 minutes later, with one very small bag.

Sadly, here doctors tend to give out too many temporary handicapped hangers, so there is always a shortage of spaces.

Today I watched a woman park (sort of) in a non-handicapped space right next to my car.  She parked about in the middle of two spaces, but left the back end of her car sticking out halfway across the driving lane.  I really tried to keep quiet, but just could not do it. So I quietly asked her if she realized that no one could drive through the lane until she moved forward.  She not so pollitely told me that it was none of my f****** business and that she didn't give a rats arse whether anybody could go through or not - they could d*** well choose another way out. And she disappeared into her intended store.

Horrible, just horrible.  I kind of like LR's report about the person taking pix of offenders.

People like that should be punished.

My mother had a handicapped sign.  I used to take her to appointments.  I HATED dropping her at the door, leaving her alone.  But there were never enough blue spaces then and she was too sick to walk more than a few feet.

As a disabled person, I really appreciate people like you who are conscious of handicapped parking spaces.

These days you really can't be too careful about confronting someone about this yourself because those kind of people obviously don't care about anyone but themselves and who knows what else they are capable of. If you see someone parked illegally, the best thing to do is take pictures or video making sure to get the make, model, color and license plate number of the car and call the police.

@lobstergal

This is exactly what my disabled husband said to me-- you do not know who you are confronting and that sometimes it's best to say nothing. But I am one of those people that when I see something I say something!

Let's all remember too that not every handicap is visible.

Cardiac patients, lung issues, etc. - all qualify but not all require a wheelchair or a walker.
