Re: Tipping help re: grocery delivery

This isn't the exactly same, but I ordered for the first time, curbside pickup from a major grocery store.  They charge $5, ok fine.  Was on their website and they said tips appreciated.  Wow, I didn't realize I had to pay a fee AND tip, not that I don't appreciate what the shopper is doing.

I did research and 10% seemed to be the amount.  Well, I ordered over $100 worth of things and so tipped $10, in a baggy for her protection.  So it cost $15 to pick up my groceries.  Then, I happened to not get a lot of what I ordered, so had to stop at different store on my way home.

Will never do this again, not worth it.

I would gladly tip a delivery though.

@lynne6was7 If the person delivering your groceries is not the person who shopped your order I would not give a 20% tip.  I think the tip depends on the size of your order. I use my store's delivery service often. I give $5 for a small order. More for a large or heavy order. Since delivery now is contactless he leaves the bags on the porch and I tape his tip to my front door.

Re: Tipping help re: grocery delivery

Thank you all for your guidance.  I know the store employs its own delivery drivers.  The store has its own trucks, and it was one of the first grocery stores in our city to offer delivery - quite a few years ago.

I plan to have the driver place the groceries in my garage.  I have a cabinet, to catch the mail from the slot, just inside the overhead door.  I will leave a tip in an envelope on the cabinet, and ask the driver from my door if s/he is allowed to accept tips.  The cash I have on hand is from February, pre-shutdown, as I haven't needed it for anything else.

I figure that we didn't take a world cruise this year, didn't buy a new car, don't own a second home, boat or rv and have those associated expenses so I'm going to tip generously when someone helps me out, especially during this horrible time.

I like your attitude and I'm 100% in agreement with you.

We do instacart and always give tip 20% as our orders are always large and sometimes heavy.  They leave them on porch and we place tip inside baggie on porch table.  Great service and works very well for us and thankful for it.

Kroger don’t allow their pickup staff to accept tops either. I am so I,pressed with how well Kroger has done Online orders and pickup. Two orders ago, I was charged for six things that were not in my bags and the receipt indicated they were there. Yesterday I got an email indicating they are giving me a $25 credit for the shorted items on my next order. I think that is very good customer service!

Tipping these delivery people is so worth it. They depend on tips.

We used Instacart a few times before we rec'd our masks & gloves and both delivered a few minutes before the requested time - so they got a better than average tip because they also did well in choosing meats and produce!

Usually use pick-up from Walmart Marketplace (even before the pandemic) and inobtrusively tipped because of their "rules".  Have also mentioned in each glowing review that we believe the staff should be allowed tips.

I mean heck!  In the beginning, it was saving us two moldy-oldies leg time tromping through the store, and now they may be helping save lives.

We did ask our regular "buddy" (we've talked to this guy maybe 1/2 dozen times, either loading the car or training - he's such a sweetheart!) whether the same person who chooses the groceries is the one that wheels out and loads them.  He said "no".  So now we know to ask them to split the tip, which is cash in a ziplock bag in the trunk.

Oh, and now it's not a tip from us - it's hazard pay!

Maybe it's me.  A lot more work shopping 30+ items than a waitress bringing your food to the table  Yes, I realize waitresses do other things, but so do these shoppers.

Re: Tipping help re: grocery delivery

We are relying on a small farm market near us. They usually have their own fruits and produce, and expanded to a deli about 2 years ago. Since this all started they added more grocery items and went to curbside pickup only. We place an order 2-3 times a month. We were one of the first to use it, and I handed the young guy $5. He seemed surprised and thanked me. The next time we went we saw a large tip jar on a table dividing the two lanes. I can't reach it, so I always give my $5 tip to the guy who puts our items in the back of the car. He immediately thanks me and drops it in the jar. Our orders range anywhere from $50 to a little over $100, but I always tip the same amount. Smiley Happy
