Re: Tipping at the self checkout?

I would like to know where the tip goes at the WM checkout. To one of those employees who stand around staring at their phones?

Re: Tipping at the self checkout?

 I have seen it mostly at Panera , or places that have that square  machine that takes your  credit cared, I am not tipping those who are getting a full salary to  " just hand you  your bag  or tray of food to go ".

Re: Tipping at the self checkout?

I have tried several times to tip the young man who loads my car when I picked up an online order at Kroger. He says they are not allowed to take tips and just would not take it. I think it's terrible to tell the workers they can't accept tips....they do work hard.

Absolutely not!  Who the heck would you tip?  I don't use self check-out anyway.

Re: Tipping at the self checkout?

The few times I have to go in WM there is usually only one cashier stand out of 32  open. It forces you to use the self-checkout or stand in line for 20-30 minutes either place.

I think the lowest amount is $1....seems like extortion to me...can't complete your transaction until you pick an amount. Just ridiculous.

@Trailrun23

A few weeks ago I was craving Pancakes, and placed an order online for the local I-Hop to pick up once I had finished running my errands. The system would not let me complete the transaction until I had left a tip. I was pretty annoyed.

if you do not want to leave a tip and  the system is asking you to....choose the option where you can type in the exact amount you want to leave.  Then type in "0"

I do this all of the time and have had no problems.

@Carmie

That's the first time that I had run across something like that. I  am not sure if I was flustered because I was trying to get out the door and schedule my pickup of the food, but I attempted to do a custom tip of 0 and it would not accept it.

Re: Tipping at the self checkout?

@icezeus   that's awful and probably illegal.  What happens if you pay by cash?

I would call for a manager and ask how to not leave a tip.  I really would.  I don't mind leaving a tip when it is deserved, but will not automactly leave one because the credit machine wants me to.

I was with my sister and my daughter two weeks ago and I took them out for lunch at Red Robin.  The wait staff doesn't even bring you a check.  You pay at the table.  I left no tip on the machine when prompted....I did the zero thing.

I handed our server 25% in cash.  She was very good and attentive.

I usually tip with cash, and do the zero thing when it pops up.

They should be giving us a small percentage off for doing all the work ourselves! At least Target will give you a nickel off at self check if you bring your own bag!!!
