One more question, Please!!!

For those of you taking it at night...

How many hours should you not eat before you take it? 3 hours after dinner, 4? More?

I have read varying info....

Taking it at night would work much better for me.

Right now, I am taking it at 5-530am.  Hold off on coffee until 6:30.  No food at all til 9am.  No other meds until noon.   I think I have that correct....

but I would like to get the best effects without waiting SO long for my morning coffee!

Any suggestions would be so greatly appreciated!!!!

It will tell you on the bottle and if it's your first script the pharmacist will go over it with you.  However, it's as hard as you seem to think.  My bottle says;  in the morning, 30 minutes before eating.  I wake up at 6:30 and I take my meds and then I shower and get dressed for the day.  That takes me about 45 minutes, it takes me 15 minutes to make breakfast.  So, I eat an hour later.  I sometimes do take it with my morning coffee and I asked my endocrinologist about that.  He didn't see anything wrong with that.

Re: Thyroid Medication - Synthroid

Here we go again.  I guess it's just impossible to make people understand that each individual may react very differntly to a medication.  Asking others for their experiences wih a medication is a fools trip.  Even your doctor may not be able to tell you if you'll experience any side effets or exactly how your body will react until you start taking the medication.

If you are taking this medication, what has been your experience with it.

@Georgiagrama   I take levothyroxine, which is generic Synthroid.  I've taken this for about 20 years.  My thyroid levels have been normal ever since starting the levothyroxine.  It's been a wonderful drug for me.  My doctor told me I would always have to take this, or my thyroid levels would get out of control again.

I have been taking levothyroxine for 41 years.  The dose was adjusted downward about 4 years ago.  I have exhaustive thyroid panel testing each year and my levels are all optimal.

Re: Thyroid Medication - Synthroid

I suggest you go to Web MD and read up on the THS and T4 levels.  I had thyroid cancer and had to have mine removed.  It is important to make sure your levels are within the norm of your thyroid function.  I'll have to take synthroid the rest of my life.  I do go to a specialist to have my levels tested every 6 months.  I don't notice that I'm even taking it, but if your levels are too low or too high, there is a possibility that you may notice something isn't right.  It is really best that you ask your doctor all the questions you want answered.

Re: Thyroid Medication - Synthroid

@RespectLife   Ugh. I had a long reply typed out and it went "poof". Bleh.

Bottom line, because my situation was triggered by having a baby and the fact that I have asthma, what I experienced at the beginning is not the norm. Keep a journal of what is going on, find a doctor that will LISTEN to you, research it (Thyroid for Dummies is an excellent book) and take your med daily.

As per all I've spoken with who take Synthroid, it's about a month before you feel better and the changes show up in your bloodwork (which is why I went monthly for the fist 6 months). I am now tested every 8 weeks as my doctor chooses to do it that way.

Re: Thyroid Medication - Synthroid

    Every body is unique.

I took Synthroid for years, and as soon as the patent ran out and other pharmaceutical houses could make their own version, I happily switched to the generic Levothyroxine.

I still have my left lobe, and I just never liked Synthroid. Generic levo has been more effective, more consistent for me.

This is one of the few meds where even though two brands are bioequivalents, your body may simply respond better to one brand over another.

Assume the differences is colouring and bonding agents from one maker to another.

Re: Thyroid Medication - Synthroid

@RespectLife I have Hashimotos and I take Armour thyroid for it.  I have been on it for around 15 years.  My initial symptoms were hair loss, low energy, and a flat feeling.....kind of depressed, just didn't care.  My PAC wrote my prescription for 30 mgs.  I have only had my antibodies checked the one time.  She said she would check them whenever I wanted, but it would not change the way she would treat me.  I have only swung into hyper one time and it was a terrible feeling.  EVERYTHING is in overdrive.  I was hot, losing weight so fast and eating everything in sight.  I had heart palpitations and heartburn.  She told me to go off my meds.  Within a week, I was back to feeling normal.  I eventually went back on the Armour.  I don't remember it taking months to feel better when I first started Armour.  A few weeks maybe? The mental cloud lifted and I had more energy.  I have eventually worked up needing 75 mgs of Armour.  I take it in the morning.  I keep it next to the bed and take it immediately upon rising.  By the time I make my coffee, I drink it.  It might be 20 minutes.  I am curious about taking it at night also.  I don't want to be revved up, but then again, it doesn't rev me up during the day. If you don't feel better in a month or two, I would ask my doctor for an increase in doseage.  My PA works by how I feel.  It isn't always about the numbers.  She checks them once a year, but in the meantime I can call if I am feeling different and she will adjust.  I go to a preventive clinic and their parameters for a lot of things are different than the average lab limits.

I don't know if my post helped you, but I could hear urgency in your post and I know how it is to not feel well.  I totally understand the weight thing.  This thyroid disorder can effect weight and I can relate about not wanting to gain.  A few pounds freaks me out.  I have never been overweight and it is a scary thing for me when I start to gain.  You didn't mention the dose you are taking, but 75 mgs is not considered a high dose.

I wish you all the best with this.  I hope you can hit on a dose that makes you happy again.  It is possible!!

Fear not Brothers and Sisters! I have read THE BOOK..........we win!!!

Ditto .... been on it for years, no side effects.

@Georgiagrama

Are you sure your MD wants you to take it because your own thyroid levels are too HIGH?

@Tinkrbl44  I'm not sure what you are asking.  Yes, the medication is for me.   Do you think I'm asking for someone else? And yes, when the nurse called me, she said my TSH levels were high. Or at least, that's what it looks like in my voicemail transcript.   That's all I know for now.  I go back to the Dr. in two weeks and will find out more about this.
