@Bird mama Do you take your Synthroid with any other meds or alone? I was told long ago to not mix it with anything else which is why I take it in the morning (I take another med at night). Yes, I'll ask my doc next time I see him but I'd like to hear from someone who actually takes the med, lol

Thank you all for sharing your experience. As you all know, introducing a new drug is always a bit scary - or it is for me. My body is extremely sensitive to medications and I explained that to my Dr., so he knows.
I am a senior with a lot on my plate. The last thing I need is a medication that makes me feel bad.
I'm hopeful that this will be one that helps. At least, you all have not given me any reason to fear any horrible side effects and I'm looking forward to good results.
Thank you all.

@Bird mama wrote:@Trinity11 I have no idea how long I was walking around with Hashimotos. Because I was also post menopausal and not on HRT, I blamed everything menopause, lol.
When I squatted down one day to get a tube of mascara from a bottom rack at the local Kmart and couldn't get up (zero strength in my legs) I thought, hmm, better mention this to the doctor. My doctor is attentive, I just took a break from seeing medical people for a few years or he would have caught it earlier.
I didn't lose hair, I didn't gain weight. I just felt fatigued all of the time. I also noticed my voice was hoarse and I blamed it on living in Michigan - sooner or later almost all of us get some kind of sinus or allergy issues.
My poor thyroid was so aggravated it was squeezing my vocal chords.
I chose to have an endocrinologist treat it in the event something jumps off regarding my thyroid - she could do the surgery.
When I first brought up the belly fat she didn't want to hear it so that night I decided to take it at night, same time to see if I felt different. I had read about night time dosing in a 2010 medical journal - there was a study done.
My blood work is perfect, the way she wants it and I feel like me. I did tell her that I switched the timing of the dosage about two years after I did it.
You sound a lot like me! With no change in my diet, I have been gaining in the middle. My eye doctor told me to see my endo quickly because apparently she saw changes in my eyes. The thyroid seems to affect so much!
I am so happy for you @Bird mama , that you are feeling better.

@Georgiagrama I take levothyroxine, which is generic Synthroid. I've taken this for about 20 years. My thyroid levels have been normal ever since starting the levothyroxine. It's been a wonderful drug for me. My doctor told me I would always have to take this, or my thyroid levels would get out of control again.
@NickNack You've had no noticable side effects? I have found that with some medications (especialy HBP meds), the cure is worse than the disease.
@Georgiagrama I've never noticed any side effects at all. My dosage hasn't changed since originally getting it regulated. I think it only took a month or two to get to the correct dosage.

@SahmIam I know it's just a thyroid thing however because it is auto immune related and I have members of the family who've been diagnosed with RA, Lupus and Multiple Sclerosis, I was horrified to be on a maintenance drug at the age of 51 years old. Seriously, it devastated me.
I made it my mission to learn as much as I could about my thyroid.
I can tell you that Synthroid can be affected by soy. I drink Silk soymilk so if I feel the need for a glass of milk I get one before noon. Also synthroid can be affected by any kind of calcium supplement like Caltrate.
I take my synthroid all by itself at night. I try to limit any snacking for a couple of hours before I go to bed. Synthroid works best when you have low bowl motility - in other words, when you are not busy digesting lots of food.
I think that's why it didn't work for me in the morning. Even though I waited hours to take it, I really think digesting food during the day affected it's ability to work for ME.
Every person's body is different.

@Bird mama Gads, yes.....SOY. I also have an issue with it and my meds so I avoid it. When I was pregnant, I had to be careful with pre-natal vitamins, calcium supplements and Synthrod as well. Very careful monitoring during all of my pregnancies because of my thyroid condition. Who knew how many things the thyroid touches?!
Thanks for the info. I'm check next week when my levels are drawn if the meds can all be taken together; which be so much easier!

i took Synthtoid years ago and it gave me headaches. The generics have fillers. i am taking a generic now (Lannet) that is making my face very oily and my hair is very oily too. my hair has been falling out for 7 months. pharmacy can't order the other generic ( mylan). that one i thought caused the hair loss. who knows...i'm slowly going bald!! i just had my levels done and they are in range. i take 37.5 mcg
i asked my doctor about Tirosint - no fillers . about $140 for 30 days. my Medicare lists it Tier 4. he won't order it for me..and it's too pricey anyway.

I've been on it for 44 years with not one single problem. I take it about an hour before I have breakfast.

I wanted to get on it because they said the wgt falls off of you I"m not fat, but, I could be 10 lbs lighter.
Anyway, Dr did blood test, normal, so, no synthroid for me. She said to me
"you don't just take that for wgt control it can affect your heart and cause osteoporosis" named off a bunch of things and said she wouldn't write for it, so, it's back to starvation for me.

@SharkE , I have been taking it for years and no change in weight unless by diet and exercise. It is not a magic pill for weight loss.
