@jpie - My local agency has 2 kinds of volunteers and I started as an administrative one and later also helped patrol. As administrative sounds, it was in the police building and varied between helping with their Citizens Academy program to stuffing envelopes for dog tag renewals to making copies of PAL fliers to serving food for all the shifts during their holiday meal. There were other duties available and many were clerical/data entry. For the patrol duties I was sprayed with pepper spray so I could carry it while in a volunteer uniform and paired with another volunteer. Duties varied from vacation house checks, patrolling the parking lot during high school football games, directing traffic in a power outage or during various charity runs, marking abandoned vehicles for possible later towing. This freed up officers to answer calls.
I totally encourage everyone to see if their local Department has a Citizens Academy program. Mine has one for both Police and Sheriff. Many will allow citizens to do a rides alongs and these are real eye openers!

Our flag, according to the flag regulations, is supposed to treated as if it were a person. This rendition is a disgrace.

I understand the reason but our flag should never be altered.

That is an impressive list of tasks that you did to help!
Ouch, with the pepper spray. I applaud you for that one, I'm not tough enough to do that on purpose! (contact lens issue)
I bet you have seen some major junk happen on those ride-alongs. Our local department has a Citizen's Academy Program so I"ll check this program out with more of the details. The precinct is about 2 miles form my house!
Our subdivision has a block party in the late summer and they attend every time. The local police are fun to talk to. I'll ask them what they need assistance with.

Just another gimmick to get your money.

@jpie - I loved my time with them and am planning on returning soon to just an administrative role. (There were issues with their previous Volunteer Coordinator but they've recently been replaced.) The pepper spray was the only defense item on our duty belt and the training showed me it was awful stuff - and they only sprayed us in one eye. One of the requirements for being a volunteer there was to have been a Citizens Academy graduate. If you do a ride along, pack a snack and a beverage cause they usually don't have time to stop to eat - and sometimes there's only a quick convinence store stop for a restroom. There are lots of memorable calls and many stories! I should clarify that they will eat food brought by volunteers since they know who made it - I have a cool patrol car cookie cutter that I use for them a couple times a year.
Sorry to have hijacked your flag thread!

I will join the others in a resounding no. The American flag should not be altered in this manner.
Although the sentiment is nice, it would open the door for other alterations. Some not so nice. There are reasons for flag regulations.

Rest assured, I am not buying and/or displaying this flag. I just wanted discussion.
That's odd because you started this thread to get an opinion on whether you should use it to show your support. I take it then, that since you have tallied the responses you realized that displaying our flag in such a manner is not acceptable.
Aside from the flag, what else would you like to discuss? I think today is a good day to begin good dialogue.

I saw on our local news that people have been bringing food and/or flowers to their local police. What a thoughtful gesture. I don't believe we have any "ride along" programs here. I don't think that is a good idea in today's climate, although I certainly think communities that organized it had good intentions.
