Those Hand dryers in Restrooms - best not to use them.

In 2014, a team of researchers from the University of Leeds dropped a disturbing truth bomb on the public by announcing that the no-touch jet-air dryers in public restrooms are anything but sanitary. They found that these increasingly popular devices blast bacteria from people’s poorly washed hands (most people don’t wash their hands correctly) into the air and onto nearby surfaces in disturbing quantities, increasing the likelihood that you'll walk out of the bathroom covered in other people's germs.

In lab-based experiments recreating a public washroom, jet-air dryers introduced 27 times more bacteria into the air than good-old-fashioned paper towels, and these microbes circulated for 15 minutes afterward.

Now, the authors are back with even more evidence against hand dryers, this time from real-world experiments.

As reported in the Journal of Hospital Infection, Professor Mark Wilcox and his colleagues set out to examine how hand drying methods affect bacterial spread in hospital bathrooms – an important issue because many serious and antibiotic-resistant infections are known to circulate in clinical settings.

The investigation was conducted in hospitals in three cities – Leeds, Paris, and Udine, Italy – over a 12-week period. For each location, two restrooms used by patients, staff, and visitors were selected, and each was set up to offer only a jet dryer or paper towels. Samples of the air and swabs of restroom surfaces were taken every day for four weeks, then, after a two-week pause in collections, each restroom switched to offer the alternate drying method. This process was then repeated a third time.

We travel by RV too.  I love it.

Unfortunally, I suffer from  digestive issues. I never know when I will have problems.  I have no warning. On occasion, I have not made it on time.

I have to use public restrooms often.  I don't like to, but the alternative is much worse.

So far, I am still alive. There are germs everywhere.  I just don't touch my face, mouth or eyes when I am away from home without making sure my hands are super clean.

I always carry a large container of antibacterial hand wipes with me..in my car and in my purse.

I've been wearing flesh colored gloves to open doors and push carts.

I 'd hate to give up eating out at nicer restaurents. Wish they would get sick days.

Hygienic issues aside, I absolutely hate those things and always have... So noisy and not very effective... On those occasions I use a public restroom it's always good for an eye roll if I see those are the only option being provided... When they are, I find an alternative in my bag, where I keep tissues...

That is disturbing but makes total sense.    I have a friend that works in a jewelry store and she told me that those high tech dryers can actually loosen stones out of their settings!   I avoid public restrooms too but on ocassion have to use one here and there.

I also keep tissues in my bag and paper towels in the car for an even better drying, as not drying your hands thoroughly can also leave bacteria on the skin.

Thanks for sharing @gloriajean This is interesting.  Around here the public schools have replaced paper towels with hand dryers.  Schools are already germ centers.  This adds to it.

I have heard for quite some time that these machines are very unsanitary to use.  Unfortunately, I believe so many places use them because they don't have to deal with supplying paper towels -- it's easier and cheaper for them!

That's why we got one years ago, to include no bedspreads or carpet that has been used and probably not cleaned prior to our use.  I got freaked out one year on that.  Also, some places don't know where to put A/C units.  We use to camp and travel. Times gone by now for us.
