What kind of "healthcare" environment are you talking about? I have many friends who are still working and are doing very well in this economy - their experience and skills are treasured by their employer and by the physicians they work with.

I have a job but am always interested in the marketplace for my skills. I did two interviews this week after answering ads that asked for the moon. 7-10 years minimum of very specific experience, deep management experience, cross function experience across multiple platforms and a laundry list of technical skills.
Like you during each interview I was told each job was actually not upper management but middle, despite the crazy job description. When they asked how much I currently make each said they couldn't even come close to meeting that salary.
I understand that they're looking to pay as little as possible for the most experienced employees, but what made them think I'd take, in one case, a 30K salary reduction for the honor of working for them?

When people say they are "in the healthcare field" what does that mean? Are you working at the professional level? or are you a tech? For instance -- a pharmacy tech is not going to make the money or advance in their job as a pharmacist would. A CNA is not going to make the money or advance in their job as an RN would, same in almost every department. So - I find statements like "i work in the healthcare field" to be pretty misleading. You can be a typist who transcribes dictation in medical records and , technically, you work "in the healthcare field" - though there is not a lot of room for advancement in that area, past becoming the department manager when the one who is already there leaves. Whereas professional staff always can be upwardly mobile if they work on it.

Plan to be a better trainer.
Unless your area is saturated with trainers or your services aren't needed in your area, there's no reason you can't stay busy. If there ARE a lot of trainers in your area, you need to get a rep for being the best.

I'm also working but we had a 20% salary cut last year on top of no pay raises for the past 8 years. The business may be on it's last legs - I'm not sure how long the owner wants to keep going. I went on one interview where, like you, they wanted lots of experience in many areas and seemed impressed with my credentials but when they asked my salary requirements they said the same, oh, no we can't even come close to that. And I think they thought I would just LOVE to come work in their beautiful surroundings for lousy compensation. Well, no, I don't have someone else supporting me so that I can just accept a lovely physical environment. Nevermind the fact that I've worked hard in this field and came up from the bottom.
