You can have your settings to family, friends, or 'just me

Choose the pages you like...Martha Stuart, Food Network for example

Install ad bloc end or ad bloc plus to get rid of the ads

Re: Thinking of joining Facebook

Go through ALL the settings and privacy settings to make sure it's as tight as it can be.  Still - well, anyway, you'll know whether or not it's for you.  Smiley Happy

I found that it wasn't for me but I do have a lot of friends who enjoy it, so there is something for everybody.

Also, if you don't use 'Adblock Plus' and you use browsers to which you can install it, try that for ads.   Sometimes you can't get rid of all ads or spamming but it should help.

I never liked it, I deactivated my account long ago, but my kids and DH love it.

I really don't have a problem with ads  or spam at all and I just use it to follow the things and people I like which sounds like what you are going to do.

A tip if you don't want every human being you've ever met, worked with, family from all over, etc to "friend" you and get in your business: pick a nice nom de plume you like and select just me for your privacy settings.  Don't fill out where you live, work, like, etc. and you should be able to see what you want to see and not be bothered by the nonsense that can go on both from "friends" and the FB marketers .  The best thing I ever did was log out of real me and become a virtual private me and now I see what I want, when I want, and no one's personal feelings get hurt.

Re: Thinking of joining Facebook

Gosh, I LOVE Facebook. Set your security settings tight. I have mine so that anyone can search for me (because otherwise people can't find you), that friends only can post on my wall, friends of friends can read my posts on my friends walls.

I I haven't noticed any increase in spam. Most ads are in the far right of the screen and I don't even notice them.

Why is it, when I have a 50/50 guess at something, I'm always 100% wrong?

Re: Thinking of joining Facebook

It sounds like many of the things you are interested in are public pages, and you don't have to join to see them.

QVC, David V (or any Q host) and the vendors like Valerie Parr Hill all have public pages and you can see their posts and those by others, just not able to reply, without singing up and compromising your security.

Most business have public pages as well.

I visit the public pages, with no interest in joining. I agree with the poster who suggested using a pen name, if you don't want a bunch of folks bothering you for 'friending". You can tell those who you might wish to view your page, just what your pen name is. Keeps the drama down when people on the fringes of your life want to have access to your page, and you'd rather not.

Re: Thinking of joining Facebook

OP, before you join, take the time to print out their TERMS OF USE that you must agree to when joining.   You will be shocked at how they have total access to your information ... to use and sell as they darn well please.   "Privacy settings" are a farce, IMO.

Most people never question why FB is free ..... but based on the price of their stock and profitability of the company, there sure are a lot of suckers out there.

Re: Thinking of joining Facebook

I admit that I am not on Facebook throughout the day as many people are.  I only have an account because it makes things easier for keeping up with the ever changing lives of my younger family members, and some acquaintenances I would not otherwise visit, call, or email.  I don't really find the ads to be instrusive.  If you want to chat with QVC during their shows you must join, otherwise you will be restricted to "read only" on public pages.
