We are considering either stopping our Direct tv or just getting the basic package.  I mostly watch Netflix and Amazon, but there are a couple things that I like on our Direct tv package such as local sports and HGTV.  I'm not sure if Pluto or Sling, both are streaming TV, offers those. If so, I'll check with my husband and make the switch.

Call Direct TV.  I got my basic down to $22 per month.  Get the locals, shopping channels and maybe 6 movie channels; Hallmark, Audience, Disney and 1 food channel, travel, HGTV, etc.  I think it was worth it.  You can add a premium group of channels if you want.

Re: Thinking of cutting cable tv cord

We have been thinking about dropping DirecTV as well.  It is just to expensive and there are other ways to watch TV as you all mentioned.  BUT, I really like flipping channels.  If we do switch, I will likely watch a lot less TV, and that would be good thing I suppose.

@kittyloo  Not to be all up in your business but what internet service do you have that allows you enough high speed to watch Netflix, Hulu and use a Roku all at only $50 a month?

We cut the cord (for the second time as they got me back with a great deal for a year then I dumped them again when the price went off the rails) about a year ago.  We're enjoying 200 Mbps of speed for 69.99, have the Roku, Netflix, Hulu, HBO Now, YouTube TV with 50 channels including cable channels, local channels and we have that great HD antenna.

To be honest, I just want to turn on the tv and have the channels be there.

I dont want to get an antenna, Roku, Apple TV, FIre stick, etc. I don’t really understand even what most of those things do.  I don’t want to piece together my channel lineup. I just want to watch tv.

We’ll never get rid of cable.

Why is it, when I have a 50/50 guess at something, I'm always 100% wrong?

Re: Thinking of cutting cable tv cord

I agree with the previous poster.  Plus we have 3 TVs and as I understand it we would have to buy individual Rokus or whatever for each one which almost equals what we pay for cable.  Our building is going to rewire so that other vendors besides RCN can possibly provide service.  Hoping for some competition and lower rates when it happens.  In the meantime we pay our cable bill!

Re: Thinking of cutting cable tv cord

We just renegotiated our Direct TV. They cut our cost by $60.00 a month, plus I got HBO, Showtime, some sports package free for six months. You need to take to a retention specialist. Customers service has no authority.

Re: Thinking of cutting cable tv cord

I haven't tried the apps yet but all of my kids use them instead of cable or satellite.

I stopped cable 5 years ago and went with satellite.  Satellite is less than 1/2 the price  of cable for me.  I don't have any extra movie channels, just in-home dvr/genie.

Thinking of canceling cable tv and going to apps for stations and shows. How does it work for you? We don’t watch HBO, etc.

There is a heck of lot more to cable tv than HBO....lol     Not that we haven't discussed if cable is really worth the money but there are cable stations that we watch and we like the On Demand movies.  The new movies go up so fast now that we don't go to the movies anymore.  Not at all this summer.
