Thinking ahead to Christmas - Page 4

I stopped sending cards about four years ago except to people for whom such cards have been requested-- senior citizens in nursing homes or even in the senior apartments. (Our NextDoor App lists those who may enjoy cards at the holidays and throughout the year.)

The last few years-- especially the last few months-- have been so filled with illness and loss in my family-- that I lack the energy to try to be upbeat and cheerful in Christmas cards.

I quit sending out cards maybe 9-10 years ago...and the number of cards i receive gets smaller every year. That's fine with me, because I dislike all the waste of throwig those cards away. Most of them are from fellow church members that I see every week anyway.

I get a few photo cards from some friends' children who now have young children of their own. They are never "holiday" themed, except for Merry Christmas printed on the card, along with printed signatures. I've never met most of their children, and haven't seen the parents in years.

My family has never been big on sending cards to each other, so that was never a big deal.

We've pared down our Christmas a lot the last 10 years or so...gift buying, cards, etc. It's so relaxing and we enjoy the season a lot more!

Each year we send fewer and fewer cards and instead E-Mail,even to our international friends.

Daddy loved to send cards. I can see him now,in my mind's eye, sitting at the kitchen table writing out the cards. He had a few Army buddies from WW2 and those were always first priority.

I used to get a mixed box of cards each year, sent out a few, then strung the rest of the blank one a ribbon so it looks like I got a ton of cards from people!!

NO ONE has ever went over to see "who sent a card"!!! Because...no one cares!!!!

I have left overs from years back, and I'm using them up. I hope I don't sent the same one I sent last year, but if I did, o well. I used to keep a list of what I sent to who, then got one or two cards when I sent out 20, and I said to myself..."Hmmmmmm.....why bother?"

If I need to send someone a note or something IN the real mail, I use up the Christmas cards to do it. Can't see thru them or the envelopes, and no one has EVER complained!!!

Even that has slowed way down, cause you can do everything online today! ( no need to "send someone a check"...but I have a friend who lives in the last century who LIKES checks so I do send him if he needs reimbursement or a gift!!!!)

Did you know that the post office has a nice selection of cards for all occasions where you wait on the line ( At least our does in our smallish town). I vowed that next time I want to send a card to ANYONE for any reason, I will just go to the PO, buy a card off that rack, and voila...sent!!!

If you only have a few folks to send them to, this could work for you too. They are nice cards too!!!! And you can ask for a pretty Christmas-themed stamp to mail it with, instead of the utilitarian stamps you probably have at home, saved from years ago, cause who sends out stamped envelopes any more?

And the basic stamps are pretty UGG LEE!!! ( the look mostly "dark" to me, unless you look with a magnifying glass!!!).

I dont' understand those craft shows on HSN where they sell kits and gadgets to make elaborate cards...people rip open the envelope, look at it for five seconds, and put it on a table or on a string to display. I will never get spending all that time( and MONEY and a place to store all that stuff!!!) creating elaborate pop up cards with all kinds of doo dads dangling from them!!!

But to each his own!!!

It is only August, you might feel differently in 2 months. We don't send out many Christmas cards. We only send them to close family and friends who we basically never or rarely see. That's about 15 cards. But I do tuck a lovely Christmas card into the gifts we give. If it all felt like an unwelcome chore to me, I wouldn't do it. You aren't being a Scrooge at all. You going with your feelings and being authentic. However, it doesn't have to be all or nothing. You can limit the number of cards you send out.

I think we got all of maybe 8 last year. So, no, no more. Those I see, I'll wish a merry Christmas. We have shrunk as a family and I'm thinking to use up leftover cards, maybe taking them in (after getting an OK, with the nursing homes) to take some in and let the workers hand them to people who might love to get some cards for the Holidays.

People without families, or alone, at this time of year, would love pretty cards. I think it's the spirit of the season. Giving to others. Doing good, making someone's day. Showing love. I'm sure someone would love to get those cards.
