Re: Thinking ahead to Christmas

[ Edited ]

I am not a fan of the photo Christmas cards either. I would rather have a note even if it is brief so I know their assistant didn't do their Christmas cards for them.  I know SIL sends them out with preprinted address and signature. Nothing handwritten. Very impersonal IMO.

Re: Thinking ahead to Christmas

You saw them when you were *tackling a closet*, so that right there takes the joy out of it.

But, if the season nears and you still don't feel enthusiastic, then only send the ones to your inlaws and siblings.

I think if you enjoy writing those out, you may get the urge to send more while you're all *set up*.  Got the Christmas music on in the background and enjoying a cup of cocoa, tea or hot coffee.

And when you start receiving them from others, you may want to return the good tidings that someone was thinking of you.

Re: Thinking ahead to Christmas

I buy a new box of cards after Christmas each year. Around the beginning of November while watching television I start addressing the envelopes during commercial breaks. Then I stamp and add address labels. Then when I feel up to it I'll I start writing messages and signing cards.

I've found that if I get organized and break it down into small steps it doesn't seem like a chore and allows me to think about what to write.

I find it satisfying to have a stack of cards ready to mail after Thanksgiving. And like others, the amount of cards I send gets smaller each year.

Re: Thinking ahead to Christmas

We still have young children, so our Christmas cards are always pictures of them that we have made online. We go through the routine of buying Christmas outfits somewhat early, taking the "perfect" pictures, picking out a beautiful holiday card design, and then creating the card.  We usually have our cards mailed out by the first week of December.

There are some years where I feel done with the whole thing, but I know my family looks forward to receiving the cards.  Even though it can be a lot of work, it's worth it.  I have a collection of Christmas cards that show my girls growing up through the years.  It's very heartwarming to see.

Once they are too old to take that picture (I'll know when my older one starts refusing and making a big deal out of posing with her younger sister), I don't know if I'll be sending out handwritten Christmas cards.  I feel like I get less and less of those each year.  It's the picture cards from friends that seem to be what I get most of.  Only time will tell, I guess.

Re: Thinking ahead to Christmas

Yes I will.  But I'm not in the mood Yet to think about it.  I Do know that I won't be buying cards this year.  I have some left over from the past couple of years.  I will be trading my stock with a friend of mine with a different circle of friends and family, so neither of us need to buy more cards and we won't be sending repeats to the recipiants.

Re: Thinking ahead to Christmas

I send a ton of cards out every year.  I always have.  I thoroughly enjoy sending and receiving them.  I hand write them and hand write a personal note in each one. I Love Christimas and all the things associated with it.  I start in November and do a couple each day.  I start with the International Cards because I get those out like the 2nd week in November.  The cards going stateside go out December 1.

Re: Thinking ahead to Christmas

I have begun to think about this year's cards recently.  Usually I design my own, using the Shutterfly website and including travel, pet, and family photos I've taken in the year that's closing. I choose a design with room for a small note, too.  My pix were pretty uneventful during 2020-2021 and Covid isolation, though I did start a garden so I could at least include photos of lilies and the last holiday season's amaryllis.  My rescue cat is photogenic, too, fortunately.

Like Sooner and others, my list is way reduced in recent years, with dear friends and relatives passing away; but I still send about 30.

I am not good about keeping up regularly with friends and family, but do make an effort for the holidays, my favorite time of year anyway.
