Thinking About Local Sayings

[ Edited ]

A little diversion for those who would like to share.

For me:

Bang a u-ee (yoo-ee) (Make a u-turn.)

Wicked and wicked pissah. (Most excellent, cool)

Frappe (silent "e").  Order a milkshake and you will end up with syrup flavored milk instead of ice cream. syrup,  and milk.

Leaf peeper.  (Usually a tourist arriving to see the colors of the trees changing in the Fall but can be local folks, too)

Grinders (submarine sandwiches)

Barrel (Trash can)

Carriage (Grocery cart and I've had strange looks down here using this one lol)

Blinker ("blinkah".  Turn signal)

Elastic (rubber band)

Packie (Package Store where you buy liquor)

State-ee (State Trooper or "troopah")

And of course:  Pahk the cah in the Hahvahd Yahd because you must drop the "r".

The Leaf Peeper gave me a chuckle.  I live in MI so we have lots of leaf peepers here too.  I had never heard it used...but I will be saying it in the future. 😁

Re: Thinking About Local Sayings

I don't know that we have an local sayings, but we do have some funky pronounciations.

Charlotte = Char-lott with accent on second syllable.

Chili = Chi-lie

Avon = Ave-on.

(these are local towns/areas)

Re: Thinking About Local Sayings

The ones that drive me over the edge are not here in Hooterville but down in the valley (Scranton area).  Never heard them until I moved up here.

Yous, as in you guys.

Couple two tree, In stead of two or three. Three comes out as tree.

My DH knew "couple two tree" set my hair on fire, so he tried to be funny occasionally and use that when I asked how many cookies, eggs etc he wanted.  I informed him he wasn't funny and he sounded like an illiterate yokel.
