Two words regarding greeting cards: Trader Joe's.

I have hundreds of dollars in meds in my dog cabinet. While waiting for the cardiac vet appointment, I am already starting my dogs on her sister's unused meds. She is suffering, and the meds make her more comfortable.
They both have MVD...runs in their breed and most eventually die from this condition. My remaining dog will be my last pet.
It is way too expensive to provide proper care for sick animals and when they pass, the pain is too severe. I can't do this again.
So sorry on the passing of your beloved pet.....!!!!

@Carmie, I am sorry about your pup. It never gets easier losing such a member of the family. You may remember my posting about losing our dog earlier this year. Yet now we have a ten-month-old Golden. Yes, we're crazy. :-)
What breed do you have and what is MVD?
We just signed up for pet insurance, the first time we've ever done that. We picked the highest deductible with the thought of using it just for major event. I hope that was a good decision.
Again, my sincerest condolences.

@ValuSkr wrote:I agree - the cost of greeting cards is ridiculous. $5.99 and up! Hallmark and others add lots of embeliishments - or audio or glitter or fancy folds - to make you think you're getting something really special. No thank you! I want a simple card and i'll add a personal note that will be the best embesllishment of all. I rarely send cards but when I do it's the $1 or $2 variety, sometimes from Trader Joe's. I cringe when anyone sends me an expensive Hallmark card; I hate to ask them not to do that because it would seem ungrateful but it's such a waste of money.
(EDIT TO MY POST BELOW--Old people should not post and talk to others at the same time. I hope you enjoy the silly typos in the post. If you laugh, feel free, I won't mind! )
I think part of the rise in cost is because companies like Hallmark sell so many fewer that the prices go up. I hardly ever send a card any more and we used to have a huge list and cards for everything.
Now most of the people we sent cards to are long gone.

@chrystaltree wrote:Nothing really costs more than it "should" because this is the USA and we have a capitalistic society. Which is a good thing. Companies are free to charge what they want to charge and their success or failure is based on the consumer. And that creates competition and lower prices. Also financial situations vary in this country. a $100 swim suit might be expensive to you but it's so inexpensive to another woman that she'll buy 3 or 4. For me, there is nothing in this world that costs too much. There are things that I can't afford, there things I don't believe are worth the price and I'm ok with that because I know I can find an alternative that just as good at a price I want to pay.
My thoughts also.

@Carmie wrote:Veterinary costs are too high. It costs more to provide health services for your pet than it does for yourself. I have spent thousands on two sick dogs since August.
I can understand why some people can not afford medical care for their pets, especially emergency care.
Yes, I have pet insurance, but there is a $200 deductible for each diagnosis. I am grateful that I can take care of my pets, but many cannot.
Add Prescription and OTC drugs to that list too..for people and for pets. It's ridiculous that we pay so much here in America when other countries sell the same thing for less.
I live near a non-profit animal facility - and they charge very little and they're the best. Many veternerians make up illnesses they say ur pet has - to rip u off. It happened to me over 7 years at Banfield (in PetSmart stores).

@suzyQ3 Both of my pups are/we're Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. MVD is Microvascular Disease...a heart disease that causes the valves to leak and the heart to enlarge. It eventually leads to death. My little girl must have had a valve tear or rapture, because she just fell over and died instantly. It was super quick.
I have PetPlan Insurance. $200 deductible per diagnosis, per year and 80% reimbursement up to $8000 back a year. The cost of it does go up each year.
The first year I had it, I got almost $8000 back for one dog who had major surgery, so it definitely paid off.
Thank you for your kind words. I am wishing that your new baby has a long and healthy life.

Everything when you pay the bills and are on a budget.....cell phone bills irk me, after the charges for each phone you are still left with quite a bill and try to figure out what those charges are for.....and on the electric bill they charge a $17 "customer charge" every month, I asked what it is for and they said, "to maintain the lines". Basically we are at their mercy.

@kivah .There are no non-profit animal facilities near me. Both of my dogs needed to have a regular vet and specialists.. Cardiologist and Neurologist.
I am taking my remaining dog to a new cardiologist soon. The price for the exam and testing will be $611. The cardiologist I used for my other dog charged $1500 for the same thing and required a echocardiogram every six months for $750.
The new cardiologist is supposed to be wonderful. I hope so.
