Re: They're Up, Up, and Away in Albuquerque Today

Spoiler

@just bee    I can drive across it, no problem.  But I won't walk anywhere near it.  I hate that bridge.

My all time favorite fiesta.   I've been to two over the years, the first about 26 years ago, when Jill and Carolyn had a booth ... they were great together way back then.

@SoX    I remember when Jill and Carolyn were at the fiesta but I can't believe it's been 26 YEARS.  Yikes!!!

I miss the fiesta so much!  When I lived in ABQ,  Our dept at volunteered all worked at the Balloon Fiesta in the early morning. We found a perfect place on a small cliff in the evenings where we would take the kids to see the balloon glow....great memories. Thanks for shareing the photos/

Today is the opening day of the Golden 50th Anniversay celebration of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta.  We kicked it off at dawn this morning with the mass ascension of almost a record of 700 balloons from 22 countries.  It was the perfect morning for the occasion with crystal blue skies, just a slight 54°chill in the air and almost no wind.  There was a huge crowd and everyone, visitors and locals alike, is very excited.

Here are some highlights.

@just bee and @Kachina624 -

@just bee - You're lucky you can still enjoy those views!

I love views from up high. I just don't like the "up high" part.

I'm not crazy about planes or bridges either. When I was younger I'd get nervous climbing up to a water slide, although I like anything water and loved going down. I don't like stairs where you can look down. I've tried lighthouses, but can't get very far. In San Antonio, eating at the Tower's revolving restaurant terrified me, but I did it numerous times because I didn't want to let my family down.

As a young girl I was the same. I have no problem at all with tunnels. My mom hated those. In college my mom and I were going somewhere. I was driving. We had to drive across the Bay Bridge. We stopped and switched drivers! LOL!

@beach-mom    How would you like that gorge bridge pictured above?

They've had numerous suicides on that bridge, but horrifyingly, several years ago, in a drug deal gone bad, two men threw a third over the edge.  I have nightmares about that.

The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge?  I didn't like that one, either.  I had to drive across the Golden Gate to get to school and get home again and it didn't bother me as much as that Bay Bridge.

The San Mateo Bridge and the old Dumbarton were god-awful, too.  I still have dreams about the Dumbarton.

Visited New York and didn't have an issue walking across the Brooklyn Bridge...

Re: They're Up, Up, and Away in Albuquerque Today

Awesome pics.  Thanks Kachina and Bee for sharing them.    I see some of my favs and some that are new to me.   I don't even know if the Balloon Race happened here this year or not.  I forgot to be aware due to a lot going on in my situation.

But I've also been to the amazing event there in Albuquerque one time and I would highly recommend the experience to anybody.    Go to the different events, assuming they still have them all.  I vaguely recall (not due to the experience being less than amazing, but due to the fact that my memory doesn't work anymore) there being morning events and nighttime events, as well as throughout the day.
