Re: Then vs. Now - Your Preference?

[ Edited ]

You are asking to compare apples and oranges.

The grandmothers pictured are from different time periods.  I am guessing if you added a picture from grandmothers in the future it would be quite different from today.

I think the quintessential grandmother is Barbara Bush but that is probably because my grandma looked just like her.

It would depend on what they acted like.

Re: Then vs. Now - Your Preference?

I have pictures of both my grandmothers that look like the ones on the left and i wouldn't change a  thing about them. They were both wonderful women who lived thru the depression, 2 world wars, Korea, and Nam.Gramma raised her sons alone after my grandfather died. Nan worked outside the home.Still loved and missed.

The one's on the left had to work hard, every day. No one-day shipping for items they needed. They had to plan ahead and do everything the hard way.

The one's on the right have time to work-out hard. No worries if they forgot something at the store. Just order from Amazon and it shows up at the door in a matter of hours.

I definitely prefer the NOW look.

I am so glad my precious Granny looked like the ones on the left and made the best food in the world, made me beautiful dresses from patterns she cut from newspaper, helped me with my science homework, cuddled me at night and held my feet so the dogs wouldn't bite them (of course, there were no dogs inside, but she said that to make me feel secure as she held me and sang me to sleep).

Sorry to say but to me this is nothing but age shaming.  The ladies on the left don't deserve being made fun of because they were of their time.

And because they were not as vane and youth obsessed as some of today's grandmothers.  There were a lot of good women dressed like that living through hard times that we can't imagine, but raising and loving families through very hard work.

ETA: Looking like the ones on the right takes money, genes, time and attention that a lot of women and grandmothers can't spend on looks.  You don't get that way by accident.

@Sooner

Looking like the ones on the right probably means the ones on the left worked hard to get htem into a position so they could look like that with their good care, cooking, cleaning and training them.

@BoopOMatic  The picture on the left just warms my heart. My maternal grandma looked like that as far as dress and shoes. That's all that was available at that time. Some fabrics we have today weren't even invented yet. lol

My grandma worked very hard raising 11 kids. Made her own bread twice a week and homemade pasta/ravioli and her own sauce from her huge garden. Tended her chickens everyday and killed them herself for food. Had a goat that she milked and raised all her kids with that milk. She had several goats over the years. ALL of her children, my aunts and uncles, lived till well over 90+ except one. So maybe grandma was on to something with the natural unpasturized, goats milk. You never know. Ha.

I lived around the block from her. We didn't live rural. Our City, at that time had no restrictions on livestock or animals. It was a different time. Now, you can't have certain animals there. Very strict rules.

My grandma was beautiful in her simplicity. No makeup. Not even lipstick. She had a million dollar smile and glistening eyes. She gave great hugs. She cared more for her family than herself or "things". She was what you expect a grandma to be imo.

The grandmas on the right leave me cold. But times are changing. I'm glad I had the grandma that I had. She was wonderful. Very strong woman.

@Queen of shop   Omg.....are we related?  LOL. Although my nonna only had 10 kids, I can relate to your post.  Throw in sewing, knitting, crocheting, etc, too.  Not to mention learning a whole new language.  ❤

Re: Then vs. Now - Your Preference?

My grandma looked like the ones on the left. Sadly she was not a happy woman, modern medicine could have helped her so much. I think we can value both versions without putting either one down.

You can determine what kind of grandparents people are from photos? That's a new one on me.

Re: Then vs. Now - Your Preference?

My mother's mother looked like the left picture and lead a sedentary lifestyle later in life.  She also wasn't the warmest person.  Had to call her Grandmother ________ ( Her last name).  Very formal.

My father's mother on the other hand worked retail  her whole life and dressed smartly, but her feet were shot and wore those orthopedic shoes.  When she retired, she traveled extensively and brought all sorts of goodies for me.

My point is that at the time, when I was five or six years old, I thought my father's mother was the coolest grandmother in the world.
