@THEY CallMe Mr Wilkes   Requarding the King George statue.  Do you "They" were saying something in that the only part of King George's momument they didn't obliterate was his "Horses Arse"?

This property,  Philips Manor Hall in Yonkers, New York is now owned by New York State.

The oldest part of the building is dated from around 1682!

It was seized from the owner, a signatory of the "Dependence Declaration", who George Washington named a traitor and put under arrest.  There definitely was a price to be paid for being loyal to The King.

Re: The "Declaration of Dependence"

What a nicely preserved building, with its gallery ( not sure what to call it?) on top!

In Canada, the Loyalists were called "United Empire Loyalists".   Many Americans from Pennsylvania ( some of my relatives too) and New York, and other places, streamed into Upper Canada (Ontario),  Lower Canada  (Quebec), New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, etc.

Interestingly, linguists believe that one reason Canadian English is (generally) fairly similar to American spoken English, is because of the influence of the American Loyalists coming in to Canada.  They do have some marked differences, but would be more so without the American Loyalist influence.

I'm glad everything contentious got resolved a long time ago, we're the best of friends, and the American and Canadian sides of my family history can live in peace with each other, ha.

The Dutch Philipse family owned huge tracts of land in what is now the Bronx and Westchester and Dutchess Counties.

Loyal to the King, they fled first to New York County (then still under British control) and eventually fled to Great Britain.

There are reports that once they relocated, the King compensated family members for their loyalty and loss of wealth and property.

Thank you for sharing!

Isn't this an interesting "turn of events"!
It seems we have always been a country of independent thinkers!

And aren't we lucky to live in a country where this is allowed!

I wonder if Native Americans think the same thing?

Re: The "Declaration of Dependence"

Thank goodness the buildings shown here weren't destroyed.

Wish they would have kept the original statue.

Just attach another plaque, explaining what, when, why, etc.

That way, folks would be reminded of 'this and that' history.

Oh, well.........We finally did sculpt a replica........

'More or less', 'Right or wrong', 'In general', and 'Just thinking out loud ' (as usual).
