@SeaMaiden

Not sure how effective these are, or ever have been. Same with watching videos of fatal vehicle wrecks. "They only happen to other people", mentality unfortunately, is still alive and well.

Re: The new anti cigarette commercial with Terri

Long time smoker and quit 8 years ago. It wasn't soon enough. I have COPD and that doesn't get better. Can't do really anything physical, as I gasp for each breath. My own fault as I wouldn't listen. Meds are very expensive as there are no generics.Who knows, that may not be the least of my problems.

Re: The new anti cigarette commercial with Terri

I had an ENT specialist who did my sinus surgery and my thyroid cancer surgery. However, he handled far more serious cases, trying to save those who had head and neck cancers related to smoking. I used to see these people, like Terrie, when I was in the waiting room. It was so sad. I was very glad I had quit smoking decades before.

I quit 30 years ago thanks to many of the “scare tactics” like Yul Brenner etc.  so they might have saved my life....watching these videos of Terri would make me quit if I were smoking today......

My mother was a chain smoker when I was growing up. One day she quit, cold turkey. She got lucky. 81 now and no breathing problems.

I quit in 1967 when there were no PSA  videos that I saw. At that age they would have had no effect on me quitting or not. Until I was mentally ready to quit, only myself was what made me decide to quit.

My hope is you are right, even if it gets 1 person to quit. Mass numbers quitting because of them?

Re: The new anti cigarette commercial with Terri

I smoked when I was young...started at 15 but I played with them. Back in the 70s it was the cool thing to so. Smoked at work, in bars and nightclubs, etc. because everyone else did. Those scare ads meant nothing to me. But I could quit them at any time and actually did when I got pregnant with my daughter 38 years ago. Never had withdrawal, never missed them. Was sensible enough to be concerned about what could happen to her and that was it. Never smoked another cigarette after 1980. Everyone’s make up is different and I guess I just didn’t have that addiction crave thank God. My dad smoked but gave it up easily when we were in high school.

[ Edited ]

I used to smoke many years ago. Back then anti-smoking ads were very graphic. One featured an actual smoker’s lung. After seeing that blackened lung I could never get it out of my mind when I picked up a cigarette.

That is what made me stop smoking.  But It was a long, long time before the craving went away. Truly a horrendous addiction.

Re: The new anti cigarette commercial with Terri

My Mother in Law from my first marriage had throat cancer and had that surgery and has one of the voice box things to talk. ( I forget what they're called) She has this since she was in her 50s. She is now 78. She mostly stays in her home, and rarely goes out except mostly only to Dr appts. (Shes my children's grandmother of course as my children are from my first marriage) So they tell me about her. She misses weddings, birthday parties everything due to embarrassment. Plus she was hospitalized many times since for various health issues associated with this. Its very sad.

PS) My 3 grandkids (who are 2 teens and 1 adult) are totally against smoking of any kind because they see what happened to her.  PS) I used to smoke too (not in the house or around kids) and quit long ago.

Re: The new anti cigarette commercial with Terri

And people who smoke will see this and think it will never happen to them.

They are so mistaken and it seems they always have money for cigarettes.
