Be very cautious with mold. Do you remember Trina Clark, the QVC model? Mold exposure destroyed her health. Check your insurance policy (hopefully you have homeowners or renters insurance right?).

If it is the bad mold, you will probably have to leave immediately. I'd find out where you can buy a test kit, or have it professionally tested. And probably pack up your important essentials now, just in case. They have to cover everything up in the apt. with special sheeting, etc. I'm thinking. Hopefully it isn't the bad type of mold, and lots of good luck to you.

The only way to remedy this situation is to remove the shower, remove all of the damaged structure, treat for mold and replace everything.

Not all mold is toxic. I would call a mold specialist and have them test it, if you can afford it, and save all documentation. Take photos too. If the findings come back that it's toxic your landlord is responsible for having it removed.
Home Depot sells kits that you can test yourself but I wouldn't rely on a home kit. My brother had a similar issue in his shower but it was remedied with bleach.
However, I suspect your mold is coming from behind the drywall in your shower. Most older bathrooms have mold harboring behind tiles and sheet rock from previous leaks and flooding.
I should of read all the replies first lol..
This is the best one...not all mold is the toxic mold....and mold behind shower stalls is also fairly common ..damp..a small area it gets in..I would get my ducks in a row and make sure I know what I was dealing with..and I would still get the mold kits..that will be the simplest way of determing what type of mold..

Ford, so sorry to hear that you're going through this. It sounded like it was a dream apartment otherwise. Be careful of agreeing to assume any expense regarding this. You could end up paying for more than you imagined because the owner can say you didn't give him a chance to respond. I would contact my local Board of Health and tell them it's an emergency situation which it is in light of your daughter's condition. I would go to legal aid and explain your limited resources and how serious a problem this is once you know what type of mold it is. You already know from maintenance that the owner has been aware of this issue for some time but has failed to resolve it properly. If none of this brings action I would contact the consumer reporter at your local tv/newspaper and present the facts to them. The owner obviously has experience in avoiding doing what is right. You're potentially going to have a battle on your hands. Good luck.

Yes, every background check in the book was done on us. And there were a lot of up front costs involved.
Yet they were hiding this secret from us. Of course we did a walkthrough and did turn on the showers but, as I said, it took three showers for the mold to loosen and begin leaking out. I have been taking basin baths ever since.
I remember the leasing agent telling us the apartment had been vacant for so long because another possible tenant kept hemming and hawing about whether to rent it. I am wondering if she did so because she became aware of the mold situation.

I do have renter's insurance. When I owned homes, I had homeowner's insurance.

Yes, and just last week an entire family had to move out of their large home because it was full of toxic mold everywhere. This was out west somewhere. They will never move back in. I don't know if the home had to be razed.
