Thank you, Krimpette. I've always liked the idea of a tub with shower feature. The old-fashioned/European chrome type, so one can also use the option of a hand-held shower feature while sitting in a tub, if they choose to do so! Best of both worlds, IMO.

At least it's not bugs or mice.

Oh, no.........brings back certain bug memories here.

Sigh. I'm so sorry this is happening to you and your daughter.

On 4/9/2015 sydsgma said: Ford...if it is one of those fiberglass showers, it nay be mildew. I had that issue in our basement shower...it was mildew and was remedied by pulling out the shower...spraying something to kill and contain the mildew, and a new shower. It was a relatively easy fix. Having said that, you have received a lot of good advice here. So sorry this has happened to you.
Mildew would be a wonderful outcome at this point. The plumber is due here any time now. It will be interesting to get his opinion on all of this.

Plumber came and reviewed the situation. He traced the water under the slab in the closet (which backs up to the plumbing in the tub and shower) to a faulty drain pipe on the outside of the house, which he is going to send a carpenter to fix. Instead of directing rain water to the backyard, it goes straight down into the ground and is piling up under the slab in the closet right next to the tub.
He was not only nice, but willing to really investigate. He did not caulk yet because he spoke to the manager, who is supposed to call me to offer to pay a third party contractor to come out and test the air in the apartment for toxicity. He said they don't want anyone getting sick. I'm not sure I trust them, but I do trust this young man, so I agreed to let them test the air in the apartment before they attempt any remediation. They will provide a written report that will certify their findings that I would be able to use in the future if either of us get sick.
He also said that once we know this is not a toxic issue, that after the caulking of the shower and tub, they will come whenever we call if it starts happening again and not hold us responsible for it.
It looks as though they are going to go out of their way to fix our issues, so I will wait to see what they do and if it is an acceptable outcome for us before I do anything else.

Ford, you already know this but make sure everything is in writing. I take it they still don't know if this is toxic black mold? Regular mold is bad enough but I hope this is just something they can fix quickly.
My heart goes out to you and your daughter. Moving in itself is stressful and this is the last thing you really needed...
