@Newgate Some churches believe it BECOMES the body & blood of Christ - others believe it REPRESENTS the body & blood of Christ. I grew up in & also now attend a represents church. How it is handled is much different due to this distinction.

@cherryWonder if my friend know that. Her nephew is an ordained Priest in Omaha! What a great bit of knowledge about the Catholic Church to share. Thanks!
When she attended my mom's memorial service, she walked into the sanctuary of our protestant church, looked at me and said, "Where is the holy water?" "Marlene, we don't have holy water." We both burst out laughing! She helped take the "edge" off the day for me and my family without knowing it. LOL

I only receive under one species (bread). I have not taken the cup in many years only because of catching something. DH has caught many colds, illnesses from taking under both species. He no longer partakes of the wine either, he has learned his lesson.

I guess I’m a wild child but I hug, shake hands, visit the sick, take communion, work in the nursery, eat communal food, etc

I used to but was young at the time and blissfully unaware or ignorant. I will not expose family to illness just because I think it's ok to continue being a wild child. People can be a carrier and get others sick with the flu or cold yet have a very mild version themselves that's not really noticeable.

At our Church, those that distribute Communion, including the priest use a generous amount of hand sanitizer immediately before giving out Communion. I feel totally comfortable receiving the host. I am much more concerned about germs at movie theaters, grocery stores, restaurants, and my clinic where I get monthly blood tests.

The past 2 weeks I have not gone up to communion - as many others also. My DH went up & drank from that communal cup both weeks. I told him if he gets the flu and gives it to me I will be very angry at him.
Hi @151949,
I can actually understand this, and I do understand too, if you're frustrated.
I have to remind my own husband about good hygiene practices, because he often forgets.
I'm at high-risk for getting ill due to my own health history, so I may sound picky about it, when I don't even mean to be.
I'll get bronchitis from one of his minor colds.

I understand your concern, but I'm not sure why they should stop doing communion. Some people may still want to do it as they always have. And an argument could be made for not doing it ever, not just doing flu season.
I don't see anything wrong with the church continuing to do this. There should still be the option to participate or not. Taking that choice away from people who have no issues with it doesn't seem very fair.
