I sympathize with all those people who have been directly affected by these terrible fires. However, poor management of these forests is responsible for the severity of the fires. Fires are an annual natural phenomena; it's how Nature cleans up debris making it possible for new growth to flourish. Until California starts to do a better job of maintaining the forests, the fires will continue to get worse. These fires aren't just affecting the West Coast; the smoke has traveled across the country and has affected air quality 3,000 miles away.

It's not so much management issues but the extreme drought situation. It is almost impossible to manage millions of acres of drought-stricken forest land.

Yes, many States are affected not only CA. We have had numerous fires in N. MINN. especially the Boundary Water Canoe area which is protected lakes and woods. There is one burning now in N. MN. Canada has caused continual smoke filtering down.  Most of July was a haze in the upper parts of WI. and MN. I live in N. WIS.  People who have asthma could not tolerate being outside very long in Duluth. The sun was encased in haze and orange.

[ Edited ]

I watched the first couple of minutes of GMA to see what the *Breaking News* was and it was the California fires.

So there was a woman reporter standing in the middle of a road that the fire had 'just crossed over' and all you see are parts of trees burning and small ground fires and I have to wonder if she really needed to be there.

On every other station they have an *on the ground reporter* with the same scene.  Probably all said and done, hundreds of reporters along with their driver/cameraman at the very least.

Couldn't this somehow be filmed with a drone from a (safer) remote area?  Do they really need to not only put themselves in the way of danger, but the fire responders whose job it is to fight the fires or help with evacuations, should they need help?

I feel those areas should be off limits or very limited.  And I'm talking ALL news outlets, probably even coming from other continents.

Think about it.  Is reporting a scene we've seen a hundred times over helping climate change or helping to fuel it?

@cactusgal   How did YOU know that's me????

I baked my dog's birthday cake a little while ago just to empty out my head.  Too much going on and I definitely need a break from the MSM.

There's an excellent article written by National Geographic dated July 27, 2021 titled, "More "good fire" could help California control future catastrophes."  Wildfire is inevitable. But prescribed burning—careful, intentionally set fire—could help manage the risks. Author:

Re: The fires are really bad

So some of you are pointedly implying that the entire state of California, and all the humans and animals who live there, deserve what they get because what they really need to do is get some giant rakes. And then cut down half the trees. And then burn the rest, in a controlled manner of course. And all will be hunky dunky. Easy peasy.

If the solution is that obvious, I'm sure they've already considered it. You should look into the reasons they've rejected your ideas. That is, if you are sincere about caring what happens to Californians.

Everyone knows where the raking blaming notion comes from.

Brush rake attachments are primarily used to pile up heavy forest debris as part of active thinning, harvesting, and removal projects – Climate FeedbackThere is equipment out there that attaches to bulldozers and other heavy equipment that "rakes" the forest floor and does not leave brush and logs that could ignite and spread into uncontrollable wildfires.

@Linmo    Don't you just love the talking points about raking forests.   Those come from climate change deniers.  Your post is spot on.   Some of these fires are in areas you couldn't even get to to cut down trees.  The drought and climate change is the reason.  There are fires in Utah, Colorado, Oregon and Washington.  There are fires raging through Greece, Russia and Turkey.    I am sick to death of people blaming the problem on not cutting down the forests

The same people also frequently say they feel that global destruction wil bring about the end of the world and they think they'll get the benefit of that. So I don't get the impression they particularly want less destruction.
