Re: The economy or something else?

Spoiler

I think a lot of online shopping is a huge part of it plus a few other variables thrown in.

Sears for example used to be known for its quality kids clothing. I went in not long ago (not talking about their Lands End line) and could not believe the cheaply low quality stuff. Ever since Kmart took over (or was it vice versa)..I looked at shoes ..omg the stuff was cheap and junk..

I go to the Outlets often for my grandkids..Carter's, Oshkosh, Gymboree, Gap....etc.. Then for Nike stuff I head to Burlington and Marshall's real...

I do a lot of online shopping at Amazon too...

I shop online and stores for myself..same for hubby. Believe it or not I find some nice things in Sam's Club..all quality.

I think the stores are having a tough time in the Malls..and it leads to financial issues ..lease issues..etc!

I know our Macy's and JCP closed and was talking to a Mall Manager (happened to be in the cell phone store with me lol) and he said that they both still had three years on their leases..and are paying them ..so no other stores can go into the spots for those years. In a large company like that it is cheaper to pay the lease fee monthly than run a store in the red..keeping it open with no foot traffic..etc.

I think it is really a sign of the times..and not that people are not buying but are not loyal to standing stores..

It makes me sad to see malls sitting empty! These used to supply such an atmosphere of excitement and glamor.

Cannot claim that my shopping would have kept them in business tho-- my shopping has become almost entirely online.

It's like Borders bookstores. I LOVED Borders - but I switched to e-readers like many others and no longer bought much in b&m bookstores. I still loved to look, but my purchases dropped by two-thirds. I was sad when they closed and knew I'd contributed to it, but it wouldn't have changed anything in the long run if I'd continued to buy - and I wouldn't have anyway.

@LTT1I love color and texture so much, I miss those little moments when I could just spend some time in a store looking at all the things.  At Banana Republic especially, I need to try on first.

When B&N and Borders came onto the scene, I was determined to keep the local independent bookstores in business.  I did my best -- lol -- but slowly caved to the astonishing collection of books and magazine that the big stores offered.  I also bought tons of books at Costco.  Now, I have a kindle and now download almost all of my reading material from the library.

Re: The economy or something else?

As far as clothing, for the most part I will always need to try  on - I'm different sizes top and bottom and have been all my life. So while I buy clothes online, it's usually after going into a b&m store and finding out size/fit by buying there, and then re-ordering online. So I will be very upset if b&m stores continue to decrease to the point of non-existence. I don't need them as much, but I still need them - and I suspect many people are like me in that.

Oh those times are becoming rarer, aren't they? I'd forgotten how wonderful it was (to me) to go into J Jill and Coldwater Creek -- the stores were kept so neat with everything all grouped and/or folded! LA TI DUM!

Today's news. WSJ

Kohl’s Corp. on Thursday posted a 87% drop in profit in the latest quarter and a surprise decline in sales, in the latest sign of distress by a department-store retailer.
