Reports show that a college education has increased much faster than inflation. Making it much less affordable unless students or their families go into debt.

You are so right....
Prices of things in 1968Average Income per year $7,850.00.
Average Monthly Rent $130.00.
Gas per Gallon 34 cents.
Average Cost of a new car $2,822.00.
Using the US Inflation Calculator, those prices from 1968, adjusted to today would be:
Average income per year : $56,751.89
Average monthly rent: $939.84
Gallon of gas: $2.46
Average cost of a new car: $20,401.76

Does anyone care what I paid? Probably not if I had told you at least a half a dozen times or more.

Then perhaps alternatives should be explored.... My personal feelin, except for a few specialized fields that require it (ie doctors, lawyers, teachers etc), college degrees dont seem to carry much weight at all these days....Its a different world
Technical schools, trade and vocational schools, internships with companies...... There are also schools for health careers such as Physcial Therapists, Phlebotomists, Health Information Technicians etc etc etc....courses are for a year and cost much less
....
For example some electricians earn $70,000 or more per year......plumbers earn $54,000 or more.....
I have co-workers that paid for college degrees in history and psychology and all they got out of it was college loan debt and working in a business office
