Did anyone notice how the clothes they wear to the weigh-in changes from the beginning of the show to the end?
In the beginning the women wear bra type tops and shorts positioned to show their big bellies. The men have to take their tops off to show theirs.
At the end of the show, everyone keeps their tops on so you can't see all the extra skin hanging in front of them.

Audition and cast a group of severely overweight, depressed people at the end of their rope and put them on National TV. Throw them together in a house to compete against each other against impossible circumstances, grueling workouts, starvation diets, shame them, call them lazy, barely reward them psychologically when they're doing well, dangle a monetary carrot in front of them to give them incentive, get them to the point where some become almost anorexic because they want to be the skinniest of them all to win the prize, get an audience to watch desperate people do desperate things to win money, clap and praise the skinny winner...
You nailed, it, Cat. That's exactly what it is, and (in my opinion) precisely why this sort of human circus shouldn't be supported by sponsors and viewers. It also gives some viewers false hopes since they're not aware of the facts of the show.

I think it's humiliating...

Kai won the show in 2006. Why is this news now?
I believe she was the first female to win back then. She went on to write about her experiences years ago. She made the talk show rounds, etc long ago.
I wish her well.
eta: oh, must be a new season about to begin?

1) Then people should stop watching the show and STOP giving it ratings!
2) No one made theses people sign the agreements!
3) You have the right to leave anytime you'd like!
4) They are not prisoners!
5) They CHOSE to stay!
And again... No one made them sign the agreements!
Pretty simple...

This show is so the opposite of any sane health guides that it isn't even funny. I also, am totally surprised that they haven't had any contestants die.

For the first few seasons, I hadn't watched the show and didn't know what it was ..... I thought it was a DATING reality show!

I haven't watched the show in years. Yes, they willingly chose to be on the show. Yes, they willingly signed the contract. Yes, they willingly choose to stay. BUT, that does NOT give the operators of the show cart blanche right to jeopardize the health of the people who are there.

Plenty of people sign agreements in their lives (especially at low points) not knowing exactly what they're getting into. It still doesn't make it right for the show to take advantage of them.

Everyone we have had sign agreements are told to consult with an attorney. There are a number of shows that have attorneys that will sit down with the group and explain the agreements in full. So no.... contestant ignorance is not an excuse!
People know what they are getting into. They choose to play dumb after the fact or they see the next opportunity and they're still under an agreement option and don't care if they breach or break agreement clauses.
