Re: The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald - 40th Anniversary

I think the song The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald is a type of sea shanty.

As a boy, teenager and young man, my husband loved boats and ships, built them, sailed them, and made lifelong friends doing so.

When we were first married, I heard a lot of sea shanties, lol.  He loves this one, too.  It tells a story, some sea shanties are folktales, some are set to the motions of at sea labor.

Dear Mr. Lightfoot:

Question:  If the ship went down on November 10th, how did the "November winds come early?"  It's November!

Sincerely, your fan,

I vaguely remember the incident.  It was odd that a ship would sink as if in the ocean over in a lake.  Things happen.

"The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald"

The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down,
Of the big lake they called 'Gitche Gumee,'
The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead,
When the skies of November turn gloomy

- Gordon Lightfoot

Re: The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald - 40th Anniversary

I  live in Mi. I remember this as I was about 16 at the time. Our great lakes are just that Great These brave mens bodies still lay in over 500 ft of water.  The storms from the lakes are sometimes horrendous - but they are beautiful none the less. In my town there is a maritime museum  where you can see many artifacts from many ships that went down. I love the song as I felt Gordon Lightfoot paid tribute to these men and there families.

Re: The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald - 40th Anniversary

I've always loved Gordon Lightfoot's song.  It's not too long at all because it tells the story in a hauntingly beautiful way.  I wouldn't change a thing about it.

Yes, the storm was in November but the fierce November winds came earlier in the month than was usual
