Tomorrow is Labor Day...the day we say thanks to workers everywhere and to the labor movement if particular. Without the labor movement, people would still be working 6 or 7 days a week, with no paid vacations or sick days.

Let's take this weekend to celebrate American workers, not put them down.

Times are tough for everyone my dear and yes I have been there. Have you thought of going on the lecture circuit?

Speaking as a mental health professional, I really wish that folks would stop throwing that "crazy" word out, or speculating that this woman was "mentally ill". I realize that everyone here is probably saying these things in jest, but I don't think that most consider how harmful these stereotypes can be.

And btw - sometimes people (possibly this woman, even) are just mean, hateful witches. No need to slap a further diagnosis on them. Smile

I sincerely hope your aren't involved in mental health with a statement like that.

Why?

You have no idea what's behind this woman's behavior, none. To diagnose her as just a mean, hateful, witch with just this limited, one time event is irresponsible and outrageous coming from a self proclaimed mental health professional.

Are you denying that some folks are just "mean, hateful witches"? Colonel Meow wasn't diagnosing THIS lady at all. She said, and by the way SOME people, not meaning THIS lady in particular. That is what I understood her to be saying.

Even mental health professionals are allowed to state the obvious.

Yes, this is exactly what I was trying to say, Cody - thank you. I'm not going to bother individually replying to other posts that quoted me (I believe that I would probably be wasting my breath in this crowd). I will say that I hope people realize that being "mean", "hateful", and "aggressive" are not among the most common symptoms of mental illness. This was the one and only point I was trying to make. Smile

I'm thinking that some people who seem to be 'just plain mean' need a few anger management classes. There might be ways to unload their frustrations. (Boxing classes, etc.)

'More or less', 'Right or wrong', 'In general', and 'Just thinking out loud ' (as usual).

Maybe, lol! But I thought the majority of the posts here were relatively tame, considering how incendiary Viewpoints can sometimes get!

Re: The Strange, Angry Woman at the Store Today

@ Cody,@ Colonel Meow, Cody, let me also thank you for your compelling and stellar commentary in response to some posters not understanding the 'gist' of what Colonel Meow had previously stated per this thread.I was READY to have my fellow Professional sisters 'back' but you beat me to the punch and along with Colonel Meow, articulated your position beautifully. That being daid ,I concur with Colonel Meow 100% that labels such as 'crazy','mentally ill','schizophrenic',and my biggest 'no no' and pet peeve,'psychotic'.I know a lot of people may say these things in jest, but to those of us that work with this population on a consistent basis, and have yes have studied, taken our state boards, take many CEU's in order to retain our license and keep abreast of current Mental Health trends; the terminologies widely thrown about take on a very different meaning.Because we utilize the DSM,IV in formulating a diagnosis and are able to recognize the behaviors and pathology befitting the patient, one knows to never indiscriminately use a term that can mislabel or harm them .No one is claiming to be an "armchair psychiatrist",but please do not belittle or dismiss our statements as "self proclaimed".It is disrespectful and does not warrant the core of her argument;which is to say that sometimes people can just be mean, spiteful, biea itchy, and nasty. It doesn't mean they are technically "crazy".It just means that they 'may' have a character flaw or going through a he'll*ova difficult time that are not so readily apparent to us.
