Re: The Shocking Call My Friend Got Today !

I've been reading all of the feedback and I have also talked to my friend about possible scam activity. She is very aware of scammers and says she's checking obituary info and making sure this is not a scam.  She says she was told it may take a couple of months in total to get the will through probate and any fees to be paid ( I know nothing about how this all works)  before everything is finalized. She's also aware that she should not give out any banking information. Thanks everyone !

@occasionalrain Good advice but neither my mom nor my husband wanted an obituary. Not everyone has one published.

Re: The Shocking Call My Friend Got Today !

Find the attorney's official office address and send him/her a letter.

If the name of the attorney who called wasn't written down, then be sure you write it down if and when you or the friend receives a phone call.

Everything (all communications) should be in writing, not via a phone call.

'More or less', 'Right or wrong', 'In general', and 'Just thinking out loud ' (as usual).

Not necessarily, I had to deal with a situation like this last year. I was the trustee of my aunts estate. I had to hire an attorney, and I had to provide the attorney with the contact information for them to reach out to contact the beneficiaries.

And it was the attorney's office who contacted the beneficiaries and not just some "friend" via email.  Correct?

@DottieBlue

Correct. The attorney's office reached out to all of the beneficiaries.

Re: The Shocking Call My Friend Got Today !

Sounds very odd all around.  All confusing but I assume the person looking for her was the attorney settling the will.  I went through something similar when my father's older cousin who I'd only met as a child died.  We'd all lost contact decades before but she knew my dad had passed away.  I was in her will and a private investigator found me.  She had left me old family photos and a rambling letter recounting what she remembered of the family history.   It was valuable to me and my siblings.

@RescueLover.  If you ever try to do a reverse phone number search, you'll find dozens of companies willing to find someone and give you all their information including info in public records, for a fee.

The situation @Goodie2shoes  describes sounds perfectly plausible to me as something similar happened in my own family, which resulted in a nice inheritance.  A letter from an attorney comes later.

That’s good to know @Kachina624 🤗 Thanks for sharing.

I’m hoping it’s the real deal in this situation too.

She called me and was crying on the phone because of the

surprising call she received. Someone had been searching for her for weeks and had to end up paying a search site to find her. She had a friend that she worked with for over 16 years and they kept in touch after they retired but they didn't spend time together after retirement because they lived quiet a distance from each other and the friend was not in good health. They talked on the phone frequently but the friend's health started to diminish so her friend provided the phone number of another friend to be able to give updates on her health if she would no longer be able to call.

After not hearing from her friend over time, my friend tried to contact the other friend but not able to reach her.

Today she got a email that someone was trying to reach her so she called the number and found out that her friend had died Oct 6th. Very sad, she was crying on the phone. Once the caller verified who she was to my friend and the caller  verified information about them working together the caller told my friend that her friend had added her to her will.  She was shocked !  She verified there was no doubt and it was not a scam. Now that's a real friend and a blessing !   Sorry for the long post but you just don't find friends like that nowadays !
