Season help is easy to terminate.  UPS can hire more than they need and let them go if the work doesn't pan out as expected.

Drivers are the issue.  They need a commercial driver's license.  The "assistant" in the van doesn't need to be, and I'm not sure how helpful they really are, but UPS really needs more trucks on the road.

I had an Amazon item expected yesterday but is listed as delayed and may be delivere today.

But the other item I ordered arrived and an hour later a Prime truck drove past my house.

I have to wonder just how many trucks are delivering to the same place?  It doesn't seem organized, but maybe it's different levels of service.

Darlingdino, thank you for sharing your husbands story.  I forget that when I worked in an office, our UPS guy was always running at top speed.  We would give him his favorite soda and cookies if he came before we were ready.  It's employees like him that keep the deliveries moving.  Thanks to all the delivery people.

Whatsupdoc:  My son is a UPS driver, almost ready to retire.  One of the problems is, that in spite of all the hubs and trucks out there, it gets harder all the time to find qualified drivers.,  So many new drivers  think the job is easy and when they find out what's it's really like, they quit.  It's gets more difficult every Christmas because the load of packages to be delivered gets higher not only then but every single day.  My son usually has a 12 hour work day at this season and never stops for lunch. Plus  the company says now they must also work on Saturday as requited.  The pace is unbelievable. Did you know that every stop is timed?  I know those rewards lifted your driver's spirits and he appreicated it., whatsupdoc!

VABelle:  My son, a veteran UPS driver, says that many of the seasonal help these days are not of much use so he usually prefers to do the deliveries on his own.  Occasionally, he has gotten a really hard worker who appreciates the job. Those are the ones who have a good chance of being hired permanently.

@new nickname 4 You are so welcome, the internet shopping has been increasing every year, the company needs to expand more hubs and hire more people, they are working on that to be better able to meet the demands. Every area of a state is different as to what the demand is and some areas have a high demand but not enough work force. Our area is one of those. There are signs literally ever where in town for UPS hiring, and the county is giving the company problems about expansion. My husband has been with UPS for over thirty years, he was there way before this internet shopping fenzy took off, people forget this internet thing is not all that old and companies are trying to change to accomendate the new world we all find ourselves in. Luckily my husband will be able to retire soon, he said maybe six or seven years more. The pressure is really on the men and women at our local hub and they are really working beyond belief to get these packages out, they need more help and the help is not there. No one wants to work.

@HiLo  One of the UPS drivers literally runs. I try and meet mine at the end of the driveway when I can and am at home.My driveway is kind of long and I know of the timing. Sometimes they have a timer checking routes. My UPS driver said I am the only customer that comes out and he seemed to appreciate the effort.

Your husband is to be commended for sticking it out so long: Daringdino.  My son is also a UPS

employee of retirement age so I know first hand how difficult the job is these days.  With every passing year, the job gets harder as more and more demands are put on the workers.  My son's usual work day is always more than 8 hours, usually more like 10 and at Christmas time definitely more.  By the way, my son has been an employee for just about 30 years so they were both working at UPS when the job was much easier.  Thank you for explaining the real problems in such a helpful way and wish your husband my best!

So kind of you Gorg. I know the drivers really appreciate your kindness. My own UPS driver son, says the companies they deliver to, appreciate them, much more than the individual customers.  Hence, there are usually a few nice gifts at Christmas but nothing from the company anymore.  Yes, it is true that someone from the company occasionally is secretly  sent out to follow them around,
