If wishes were horses, beggars would ride. Or something like that.

@RetRN Well, that one often posts how intellectually superior she is to all here, which makes me LOL!!! She's the one that goes ballistic on you with insults if you have a differing view on any topic. smh

pretty sure the lengthening, fading posts represent some sort of neutralization as the warring agitators perform but I'm still waiting for the exorcism

It is not only inappropriate but it is also dismissive. It is like saying I am smarter than you. You don't know what I am talking about so run along. I also agree with you about people being unkind.
@lgfan, It's also a smokescreen... Just sayin'...

It seems that permissive parents have taken control. Good luck with that!

I heard about my generation being the downfall of the country. Our outrageous music, the way we dressed, drugs, protests, morals, behavior, guys taking off to Canada to avoid Vietnam, and plethora of other things too numerous to mention.
How did this generation turn into something that would be so awful? I saw so many "head shakes" in those days.
I am in contact with lots of children of different ages. They are bright and work to achieve goals. There are problem children now just as there were years ago. Hopefully, they will find their way and be productive citizens just like so many from my generation did.
There is hope!
@Mersha I think your parents were right and the root of many of today's issues was because of the things that changed with my generation.
@Sooner Have to disagree with you on this.
My generation worked for peace, women's and civil rights, protecting the environment, technology, movies, music, ending a war that should have never happened, etc.
I think we did a great job laying positive groundwork for the next generation.
Yes, our generation worked for those great things. We're still fighting for them.
Kids don't think that big, at least not until late teens and early 20s and some never. They are into themselves, as most teens are in any generation.
These big issues don't reflect what happens in the home. What happens in the home almost always reflects how kids behave at school and elsewhere.
Kids are not taught real history anymore. They don't learn the truth about the struggles and fights of prior generations, let alone back to our beginning. Perhaps things would be different if they did.
Stop sitting on your laurels and look at today's reality. Society changed. Life changed. Everything changed. What we did 50-60 years ago is foreign to most people.

good grief. Stop demonizing teachers. If only you knew the truth.

@Desert Lily wrote:States' dept. of education and school boards make the policies of how students are disciplined.
Many states & school boards have chosen "progressive discipline", which could mean that students have multiple opportunities for bad behavior before it's seriously addressed.
My SIL recently retired from teaching. She said there used to be a poster with her school district's policies on student behavior in every room. Students used to be expelled for bringing a weapon to school, physically attacking a teacher/staff member/student, bringing drugs to school. Expelled students were required to attend a public "behavioral" school for a semester or year or ?. 4-5 years ago, the policies changed & students were no longer expelled for those behaviors. It was due to the state's change in policies. (My SIL said some of the changes were recently being undone bc they didn't work.)
Principals came up with the idea to have classrooms in a separate area within the school for serious offenders in order to keep the other students (& teachers) safe. Teachers taught those small classes with monitors present & student counseling was required. Some students were successful & some
re-offended.
My SIL felt that parents were responsible for students' behaviors.
Students & teachers need to be safe at school.
@scatcat , I doubt the teachers stayed out of school at Charlottesville HS for a longer TG vacay. The federal govt. requires students to attend school 180 days per year in order for the school to receive federal funding.
A lot of things "used to be." Progressive punishment makes sense. You don't expel a kid for a minor thing - you give them another chance. Serious offenses deserve more serious consequences.
What used to work doesn't automatically work anymore for countless things.
Too many parents don't parent. Too many parents set bad examples for the kids. Too many parents and politicians are tying teachers' hands and adding fake information into studies. What did anyone think would happen. duh!

My dad taught for 45 years and then subbed for 5 years. He subbed only at certain schools.
Combine lousy parenting, ridiculous new laws, parents buying into propaganda, and there is absolutely no surprise that many kids will be troubled and act out at school.
Then add what certain politicianssay and do when they are upset or don't get what they want - they prime kids for bad behavior.
