@NEvans2 I also lived in western Pa. (Beaver Pa. ) when I was a kid. We walked to school everyday...no busses. Dad took the car to work...most mom's stayed home. All the moms watched out for kids as we walked 3 blocks to school. ...so we always felt safe. I don't remember newspaper in our boots 😊 but we just bundled up and were on our way... I also don't remember ever having a snow day. Times sure were different.
@Mombo1 , Same for us! I remember wearing (woolen?) snow pants that took me forever to put on! Close to the end of the school day I'd start worrying about probably being the last kid out of the classroom at dismissal cuz it took forever to layer up.
I grew up before the age of liability. Now schools cancel when there's very little snow because they're afraid of being sued if there's a storm-related accident.

Right now the weather guy was saying anywhere from 2-18 inches..what kind of forecast is that?
@Jo1313 My NY area they're predicting 4-8 and I think that's an annoying forecast. That basically just says could be good, could be bad. So helpful.
2-18 is just an insane forecast. They should just admit at this point they can't make the call. What on earth?

No reason to make fun of people. Not everyone is stocked up for days, not eveyone likes to run out of things they need, and especially people who do usually shop weekends ends don't want to get out in the bad weather.
People work, have kids, older folks don't keep lots of groceries around usually and need things. . .

You haven't heard of the Donner party?
Uh, no. If I knew what this was, I wouldn't have asked. You honestly couldn't figure that out?
Why is that a surprise? I'd never heard of it either.

Winter comes every year and along with it snow yet people act like they've never dealt with it before.

I live in eastern PA. And I am not kidding. My son's school was cancelled one day. And not one snow flake fell that day. And no snow fell in the entire school district area.

@drizzellla , Yup! For admins trying to decide whether to cancel or not, it's only about how much snow the local weather folks *say* we're going to get. The amount of snow we truly get can be very different from the predictions.
And if the predictions indicate we might get freezing rain or sleet - they can't cancel fast enough!! Those terms cause fear in the most stoic of superintendents. 😂😂😂
Tbh, they do have to make their decision early, before the first buses start their morning routes. I wouldn't really want to have to make those decisions.

I know, people will be buying eggs, bread, and milk because we'll all be making french toast!

Because we live in western MI and waaaay back in the woods we start to prepare for winter in October. Sometimes we can't get out to the main high way. We do have a Generac, and do lose power often.
