@AKgirl2  Blanche was really my favorite overall.  I love Betty White but sometimes she was just too stupid to take.  I think Dorothy being more educated had less patience with her.  Not an excuse but she always seemed the most withdrawn in terms of not being happy in the beginning.

Maude did get on Walter - lol but after all she was a liberated woman who spoke her mind.  Wasn't that the premise of that show?  Oy.

Loved the show because it touched on many social issues, just as Maude did.

I never could stand Sophia, though.

The show was definitely ahead of its time, with episodes like Blanche's brother "coming out", her daughter having a child out of wedlock, another daughter's weight issue, Dorothy's son's bi-racial marriage, and more I can't think of right now.

I kinda liked Sophia, took her with a grain of salt.

@AKgirl2 Rose had the scare with HIV and the episode with Sophia's friend who had Alzheimer.  The homeless shelter when they were looking for the lottery ticket and the soup kitchen at Christmas.  Yes, so many topics.

I didn't like the way Sophia spoke to Dorothy; I thought her remarks were so cruel to a daughter, no less.

The apple didn't fall far from the tree...look at how mean Dorothy spoke to all the gals, especially Rose.  She had a prickly pear personality on stage as well as in her personnel life.  Remember her in Maude and how she spoke/treated Walter?  I think her name

"B"ea suited her well.

@AKgirl2- she was prickly and difficult but had a good heart and did good things.   Bea was also troubled and suffered from depression.  She also was an intricate part of the success of the program. Despite her problems with BW and fighting depression, they all appeared happy and to be good friends fighting  the adversities of aging together.  I thought she had a fabulous stage personna and to this day loved Vera Charles from Mame.

You're right about Dorothy, and then there's Maude!

There's a woman I know that's a bit like Rose...I wait for the porch light to come on, at best it only flickers...but I don't let the Maude or Sophia in me come out!

Rue McClanahan and Betty White were very close friends off camera.  I remember seeing an interview with BW and she said that "Ruesy's" death was very hard to take.

Betty White is no day in the country, either and her personality clashed with Bea off camera.  I love Betty White but her tongue can be as sharp as the next person.

None of them attended Estelle Getty's funeral and her son was upset about that - but they said they couldn't make it.

I did read that she suffered from depression, and was quite the humanitarian.  It was a great cast, and I certainly can relate to the program now.  I don't think I could ever do the roommate thing though, that would definitely bring out the Dorothy and Sophia in me😁

I remember reading that Rue was more or less absentee mother to her own child(ren).

She looked pretty dowdy on Maude, but really glammed it up for GG.

I've never seen Maude.  I didn't even know Bea Arthur was in it.  They should rerun more of those shows instead of just the same ones over and over.

Question, though ---- did people really wear outfits like they wore on the show?  The weird drapey long dresses and sequins?

Is this a none too subbtle smack down on the older ladies who post here? I just can't believe that the OP is so clueless about fashion. I mean really, those "scrunchy" boots AKA slouchy boots were popular again a few years ago. How rude.

Almost every Q designer shows long dusters that Bea Arthur would feel right at home in.  All of the characters clothes were exaggerated a bit to define their personalities but basically representative of the time.

Mary Tyler Moore and Bob Newhart might have been my all-time fav sit-coms back then, along with Murphy Brown.  And, of course, MASH, but I didn't like anyone's wardrobe in that -- lol.

Re: The Golden Girls

[ Edited ]

Yes, I liked the Golden Girls too. What a funny show. Blanche was my favorite one. Golden Girls really seems to span generations. My niece and daughter absolutely loved that show too.
