Re: The Genetically Engineered Impossible Burger And The Story Behind It

@Mindy D  I don’t know where you got that nutritional information about it not being genetically modified because

the Impossible Burger manufacturer states it has been genetically modified in their own article, from their website.

https://faq.impossiblefoods.com/hc/en-us/articles/360019100553-What-is-soy-leghemoglobin-or-heme-

Do you make heme using genetic modification?

Yes. We genetically engineer yeast to make “soy leghemoglobin” or “heme” -- one of the key ingredients in the Impossible Burger. This process allows us to make heme at scale with the lowest achievable environmental impact.

We make heme using a yeast engineered with the gene for soy leghemoglobin. First, we grow yeast via fermentation. Then, we isolate the soy leghemoglobin (containing heme) from the yeast, and add it to the Impossible Burger, where it combines with other micronutrients to create delicious, meaty flavor.

While we first harvested leghemoglobin directly from soy plants, we realized that in order to make enough plant-based heme to feed the world -- and avoid the destructive environmental impact of animal agriculture -- we would need to make it using fermentation. By producing heme in yeast, we also avoid digging up soy plants to harvest the root nodules, which would promote erosion and release carbon stored in the soil.

The patty itself is made from Impossible Foods' signature burger blend which includes soy protein, potato protein, coconut oil, sunflower oil, salt, yeast and a variety of emulsifying agents. The key, not-so-secret ingredient is heme, an iron-rich molecule that gives Impossible burgers a meaty taste.

A variety of emulsifying agents? Everything they put in them has been genetically modified, from the soy to the potatoes.

The non genetically modified oroduct is a competitor’s of Impossible Burger. Their company is called Beyond Meat and the ingredients I posted are for one of their products, Beyond Burger. This product is made from ground pea powder and no ingredients are GMO.

Plant based eating is very good (and not processed! - ideally), but can anyone say that this stuff isn't highly processed?

This is not a healthy alternative to meat.
