What about the advice to cough as hard as you can on the way to the hospital if you think you're having a heart attack? My DH and I both remember reading that about five years ago.

Hi @Judaline

I did hear that a long time ago, nothing recently.  I wouldn't do it, I've had heart attacks and I think it could only make it worse, but I really don't know.  I think the silence about it nowadays may be telling.

Maybe someone else knows for sure.

@Noel7...I posed that question to the Head of Cardiology , St. Francis Hospital Roslyn, NY and he told me to stay off the internet regarding advice on heart attacks and diets. He joked with me, though, that his videos are excluded from that advice.

Woman LOL  Good for him!  LOL  Especially "diets", for sure.

Good Morning, @Trinity11

Hi @Noel7. He is often on television and quoted. I just spoke to him yesterday. He believes the only diets that work for a heart patient are diets that a patient can live with and he uses blood work to determine whether risk factors are minimized. He firmly believes stress kills more than any other factor. I have read reviews of him where some patients call him arrogant. I think of him as brilliant...

Wonderful! @Trinity11 When someone I care about is ill, and me, I'll take a brilliant MD every time.

I've got one now like that, at first he was a little off putting, but I saw him in action when I was in with the flu.  He had bought a fancy thing that allowed him to give me a heart sonogram in my bed, just laying there.  Amazing!

I was so sick I didn't notice, but the entire time I was in there, they were working on my heart to keep it from an attack. A Heparin injection every morning.

@Noel7...the Heparin left me black and blue for a week. You went through so much with the flu. My heart goes out to you. Lupus makes everything so much harder to fight off. My good friend took early retirement because she has so many flares. We are both 64 (would love to still be working but can't) and we usually have lunch out 1 a week. Lately, we get takeout and just go to each other's home. It will be so nice when Spring arrives!

"...the Heparin left me black and blue for a week."

Me, too!  My tummy looked like a horde of vampires had attacked me, lol!  They really hurt, too.  Those shots make you feel like a little kid. "Owwwie!"  Woman LOL

You and I both have been through a lot, and I'm with you... looking forward to Spring.

I hope they can come up with a universal shot. That should help us a lot.  But I am sure it's easier said than done

The Swine Flue is also floating around. We did get a shot when Pres Ford said it was the moral equivalent to war. I think he did the right thing ,even though so many people really  gave him a hard time about it

I wonder if those of us who got that flu shot ,will still have antibodies against  it?  It was back in the 70's...

@cherry- a universal flu shot is about 3-4 yrs off....H1N1 ( swine flu) is covered by the current vaccine.  The serious strain causing deaths is H3N2.

@Stray

Isn't H3N3 a Type A?

The Type B respiratory is killing older adults.  I don't think that was expected, but it's hit hard.

I did not know they give heparin during bad attacks of the flu to prevent heart attack.

Both of you, Noel7 and Trinity11 are lucky to have brilliant doctors. I’m not sure we have any of those in our city now.

i would love to know their names, just in case. (Is this allowed?)

@Noel7H3N2 is type A and that's what's making people very sick  It is also a component of this year's vaccine but a poor match.  They formulate the vaccines based in good part by Austrailias flu patterns.   They also had and are having a bad flu season with many deaths.   It's a very complicated flu season H3N2 is always around but it mutated and is peaking early.  However, some of the children had H1N1 type influenza who died.   The H1N1 component was upgraded this year in the vaccine and seems to be effective.  But, reports suggest a good number of the children who died were not vaccinated.  So things are pretty unclear right now.

Type B (Yamagata) which is particularly hard on older people has not peaked as yet but is around which is unusual.  Some cases who have been hospitalized have mixed strains.  But, the truth be told, young healthy children have died but we've had worse bouts of flu.  I think we have gone over the line toward epidemic because it's everywhere not so much by number.

There is a quadrivalent flu vaccine available which actually covers 2 As and 2Bs but not easy to find.  It would be interesting to see if its efficacy was more efficient.

The high dose senior vaccine doesnt cover more strains but has added antigen which boosts the weaker and older immune system.

I think the picture right right now is unclear and the CDC reports are done weekly and publicized.  It is an interesting read.

Hi @LTT1

I didn't know either.  Soon after admission, they gave me an EKG, they thought it was off so they called in my cardio, who just happened to be on in-hospital call that day.  I was so glad to see him but a little spooked they called him.

Long story short, they wondered why, with my history, my heart was in such good shape, he told them not to worry, that was just me.  No heart wall damage at all.  But I guess they already knew the heart risk for someone with lupus so they were preemptive.  I assume he ordered the Heparin shots and regular follow-up.

My hospital gets the highest rating for cardio treatment, they amaze me all the time.  @LTT1  I hope you understand why I am hesitant to give out identifying information, and it's not about you, you are a sweetheart.

If you get the flu, ask your team if they would get on cardiac prevention as a preemptive.

Thanks for all the information @Stray  We have had an unusual uptick in Type B in the Bay Area, many down with it, some dying.

I did not have the vaccine at that time, I was confined to the house because of an accident, so I went in cold, but I was told later the vaccine would not have covered the Type B I had.
