I think the real measure of economic health will be when the Medicaid, Food Stamp, and welfare rolls show significant decrease in numbers.

If people can't get jobs - or jobs that pay enough to keep them from needing these benefits - then it doesn't really matter how the unemployment numbers are portrayed as clearly, that is not a true indicator of economic well being.

Only 10% of SNAP recipients are able bodied adults who also get welfare.

The vast majority of Medicaid & SNAP recipients are working poor & their kids, disabled, and seniors.

Until we demand higher minimum wages that will allow people to make enough to be above poverty levels - this form of corporate welfare will continue.

Shoppers have put the heat on Walmart, McDonalds and others to share their all time high profits with their employees.

I would much rather see high paying jobs be brought back to the US. Throwing money at low skill jobs does no good.

FYI - 80% of McDonalds are owned by franchise local owners. Not much of those "high profits" available for your spread the wealth mantra.

I want to add that SNAP dollars add to the economy, as well as those receiving assistance pay into the economy.

Add to those on SNAP veterans and enlisted service personnel and their families.

the economy is not gauged by how busy restaurants, malls or grocery stores are, period. i'm really surprised that anyone would think it was.

Owning a franchised fast food place, especially one like Mickey D's is VERY lucrative.

They aren't hurting.

Re: The Economy is looking very bright again..

I do believe that the credit card(s) enable parking lots to be crowded all day long, from early morning until late evening. If it were all/mostly cash only, we wouldn't see those filled parking lots. People live on credit now-a-days. Well, that's all I can think of, anyway. Just mentioning it to a friend just yesterday.........'Why are these parking lots completely filled every single day, including working days?" We also thought that they could be employees' cars, which is a good thing, regarding employment. Well, better than empty parking lots, whatever the reason for them being filled to capacity.

So you are saying that ALL of these McDonald franchises are gold minds???? Try again, while many make a comfortable living, they are by no means "VERY luctrave".

Re: The Economy is looking very bright again..

It always upsets me when anyone says things about how everyone on welfare, SSD, food stamps etc is on the take and doesn't deserve it etc. We are ALL only one disaster away from being right there with those folks. A day like Oct 29, 1929 or any number of personal disasters could put any of us right there in the welfare lines. Are there people who game the system? Of course, but that doesn't mean we should not have something in place to aid anyone who may run into something like this.

My DH's Mom got married 2 weeks out of high school. She had no skills and never had a job. At age 35 her husband, who was a CPA and had always supported them comfortably had a massive stroke. He never recovered, however, he also did not die for several years. He was in a county care facility for all those years. Her total income was the minimum that SSD( because he was so young he really did not have much paid into SS) and what she could make working at the 5 & 10 cent store, the only job she could get. They overnight went from being a normal middle class young family to way below the poverty level.

People need to get over this thinking that they, or their children or loved ones are bulletproof. We don't know what life may bring us, and there is no way to be prepared for every possibility.

p.s. In some areas, the food service industry is keeping the economy afloat. Lots of folks crowd the restaurants around here. That, and coffee establishments.
