It's like having another eyewitness to document what happened.
Don't they usually only show what is going on directly in front of you? There can be other factors that are not recorded. Accident investigators are very good at recreating situations to determine what happened.
@CrazyDaisy Honestly, I'm not sure how good they actually are. Especially when there are no witnesses willing to stop and give their accounts of what happened (and those accounts are sometimes wrong). If you're on a busy road, you have to pull your car off the road and cannot take pictures of where the cars came to a stop. I also don't think they investigate a fender-bender like they do a case where someone has died, so a decision can be made without much investigation, and that doesn't always result in the right conclusion.
Yes, it has limited value because it is aimed forward and can't record all around, but it's something.

Now I'm curious. Maybe you should check with your insurance company, @Plaid Pants2. I know Geico says to not say you are at fault.

@makena Go for it!! If I could afford it I would buy one. Just within the last 3 months, if I had not been paying close attention the results would have been awful. People tend to drive like they are the only ones on the road.

(thread title)
There are plenty of good ones out there from which to choose, and they are pretty moderately priced. Were I to buy one for our vehicles, it would be one that attaches to the windshield rearview mirror. I can't stand anything blocking my view of the road, on the dash or somewhere on the windshield.
My driving is but a fraction of what it use to be, but I do drive on all types of public roads, but our city, thankfully, has very few round abouts, at least the places I have driven.
I am never apprehensive about driving, before or during. Nobody on the road on/in any type of vehicle is going to intimidate me, or alter the way I drive our vehicles. If they want to risk getting injured, or worse, it is all on them not me.
One think I am happy about is back in the 2-lane roads only, all these idiotic electronic gizmo's were not in the hands of these seemingly "addicted morons" behind the wheel. No phones/no selfies(if that is even a word), and certainly not a second by second account of what these idiots are doing.
If I see one that has every feature(when it comes to electronics I am a perfectionist) I want, I will buy 2 of them. While there are many good ones out there now, they have a couple more steps to add before they would be worth the $$ to me.

True, accident investigators are good at figuring out what happened, but I see that having a dash cam is just one more tool to help in that investigation.
Also, they can help in minor accidents, too.
One would download the video, and email it to the insurance company, because the police don't send out an accident investigator for every accident.
Heck, for that matter, the police don't even show up for every fender bender.
Also, what if I am in an accident and I can't remember what happened?
Then the video would be another added tool in determining what happened, and who was at fault, me, or the other party.
Thank you for a civil answer.
So few accidents occur in front of you (unless you hit something). The dash cam is not recording your speed, if you are distracted, if a light changed, construction workers instructions, etc.. There just seems to be so much that is not captured that it is not worth the time of money for something that might happen in a very small area.

personally, i don't know anything about dash cams. i do know however that we need to be hyper-vigilant out there. driving is no longer a pleasant way to travel, much like everything else.

@CrazyDaisy wrote:Guess I am a little confussed, what would be the purpose of the dash cam. How would it make your drive better?
Nothing improves one's driving but the driver, and long time experiences help. Camera's are used to record exactly who did what/when/how, and why. It will show who was in the wrong when a meeting of vehicles go "boom".
They also can be used to monitor your vehicle when you are not in it, both inside it or outside of it. With some on the market you can so both simultaneously.
That is the purposes of a camera for most, but they also can be portable and many take very good "still pictures". Where you got the idea that @makena said it would improve her driving!
Does this help unconfuse you?

WOW, a little nasty today. Never said her driving, I said her drive.
Her whole post was about her miserable drive to work. Perhaps you could reread and apologize.

Of course one never admits fault when the accident happens, but the video can be used by the police and/or insurance company to make a final determination of who is.

Most of the good cameras have a "wide angle lens". They can pick up the peripherals that are not directly in front of your vehicle. If a person chooses, a camera can also be installed on the rear or sides of a vehicle.
Will they see everything? Maybe not, but generally enough to tell what/who caused the meeting of the metal. By that I mean, who had the "right-of-way".
