Re: Thanksgiving is being pushed aside by Retail

Holidays are what you make them. As someone that has had to work all holidays for many years, you learn to adjust. OP said that everyone needs a day in which to reflect and be thankful. The calendar doesn't have to dictate which day that is. Since I've had to be away from home for work on so many holidays in the past, my mom and I now have a tradition of going out shopping Thanksgiving night when I am home and will be out next week. It's something we really enjoy. I know she has spent many holidays alone in the past and has said herself that it's nice to get out and go look around the shops, instead of staying home alone. Not everyone has friends and or family around to spend holidays with.

Re: Thanksgiving is being pushed aside by Retail

First off, I do not think it is up to the OP or others to decide when people can shop -- whether it be Thanksgiving, other holidays, or Sundays. If you wish to stay at home and not shop, great -- but do not tell anyone else how we need to celebrate. Our lives, families, communities, and values are different.

As far as stores being open, yes, some retailers are open to compete with online orders and other stores which are open that day. After a few years, if retailers determine if this is profitable, they will continue being open, but ultimately, it is up to the retailer. It is jot up to the OP or anyone else to dictate how we need to spend Thanksgiving.

Just as an FYI or the OP, I will NOT be shopping on Thanksgiving. I will be home, cooking and enjoying my meal. I am doing this because that is how I wish to spend the day -- not because others have decided that is how I must spend the day.

They wouldn't open if so many people didn't go and spend. It's all well and good to blame the stores, but it's all the shoppers who have brought this about. People seem to want to shop whether it's a holiday or not.

OP was just expressing her sentiments and her thoughts. She didn't do it in a manner that was ramming it down anyone's throat. I think it was a lovely sentiment.

Re: Thanksgiving is being pushed aside by Retail

There are many people who work odd hours and may welcome the idea to adjust their Thanksgiving celebration to be able to do some shopping. I choose not to shop on Thanksgiving, and certainly NOT on "black Friday", so it won't impact me on celebrating Thanksgiving in a more traditional way.

i believe people vote with their feet on this one by choosing to shop or not at stores that open early or whatever. or whether they turn on shopping channels like QVC on Thanksgiving Day -- ahem!

Re: Thanksgiving is being pushed aside by Retail

Thanksgiving is not lost unless you let it be. It is alive and well in my family and with everyone I know.

No one is forcing anyone to shop on Thanksgiving. There have always been professions where people are required to work on the holidays. Of course, police, fire, hospital staff, and other safety personnel come to mind, but also restaurant and hotel workers, convenience stores and some supermarkets. And what about those poor football players? {#emotions_dlg.devil2} I'm sure there are others. I rarely hear anyone complain about those poor workers. It's life.

Do I support retailers being open on Thanksgiving evening? No, and I don't do any shopping the entire weekend of Thanksgiving, either. But many people do. I used to work in retail, and it just comes with the territory that you are going to have to work long, crazy hours around the holidays.

Have the holidays become increasingly commercial? Absolutely. But I find it ironic that people complain about it on a forum owned and operated by a shopping channel. I've never heard of anyone complaining that QVC doesn't shut down on Thanksgiving. (ETA: Or maybe they do? I have never watched QVC on Thanksgiving!)

That's what's I was going to say. I have also never felt the need to shop on Black Friday. I will go out on Small Business Saturday and support my local shops. Many have mini-open houses with cider and cookies, etc., so you feel a nice Holiday Spirit, not just the rush-rush- of big stores.

I'm the boss in my own house, so Thanksgiving is still the most important family holiday of the year here. I have a nice collection of handmade Pilgrim and Native american dolls from Plimoth Plantation that I display along with my Madame Alexander and Annalee dolls and figures from my childhood.

I love Fall colors. Christmas can wait tip December.

I enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday and meal. I live in Los Angeles. There are so many immigrants here that never celebrated or will ever celebrate the holiday like traditional America. Sad. So, stores, swap meets, mom and pop and others are open for business. I give thanks daily for whatever I do have and for this wonderful nation. It's too bad others won't and never will.

I'll bet many of those immigrants give thanks every day for being here, even if they don't express it in the same way that you do.
