Did USA win anything? If not, that's why it was preempted.

The Gala is not a competition, so no one won anything. It is just an opportunity to see all the top skaters perform extra routines and is traditionally a great way to end the games. This is the first time they have been treated so badly.

Especially because NBC hyped it so extensively and said it would be in Primetime, lots of us were upset that they didn't show it except in snippets and then after most of us had to go to bed.

As for the filler of the swimmer, she's a swimmer! The Para Olympics that will air in March are WINTER GAMES ... No swimming. And then they showed it again today when they said they were going to show bobsledding.

I loved the fact that NBCSN covered events daily LIVE and that we got to see all the performers in some sports, but this weekend, they dropped the ball. Too many pre-taped "features", not enough competition.

I too was equally disappointed, as this supposed "gala" never took place. Being Dutch, I was also disappointed that the only countries they featured walking with the flags were Russia, US and Canada where the Dutch ice skaters became the World Olympians Champions and with their 23/24 medals, and breaking most of their own records, they also should have been up front. It was not very sympathetic.

Here in DC it was shown at 8:30-10:30. Now, my sister read it would be from 10:30 - 3 or something. She now lives on the West Coast and suddenly they changed to (their) 8:30-10:30 also. I can only imagine she too wasn't happy to see more slalom than the gala ice skaters, as so many of us had to lose watching that till the end of every night as it was.

NBC it's time you either take the wish of the people in consideration or bring more variety. As this stunk.

The reason that NBC spliced the skating program, was because they wanted the viewer to stay and watch the whole thing.

If they aired it all in one chunk, and the program ended at 9p.m., they know that they'll loose viewers who tuned in just to watch that.

It's all about getting the viewers hooked, and to stay, because as we all know, it's all about the ratings.

I just posted on another thread that I couldn't wait for the Olympics to end this year. Too much skiing, snowboarding and "flipping." Ice skating events were generally on fairly late, and with all the commercials, I fell asleep missing the things I really wanted to see.

There is nothing, absolutely nothing more boring than skiing of any kind, and the Olympics is 90% skiing. I saw what their plan was with the "ice gala," and after the first three skaters and their return to skiing, I turned it off, and promptly went to sleep sometime around 9 PM.

And how did that work out for them? LOL

From what I've heard and read all over the internet, those of us who gave up and turned the whole thing off were in the majority. And not only were we "disappointed" we were angry, and a lot of the giving up on NBC continued through all of Sunday's broadcasts.

Hopefully, they learned something from this that will help them in 2016.

I enjoyed it as I do most of the events. It was on from 7-10 here. The swimmer was on to promote the Olympics I believe start March 7. I enjoyed her story.

She's not in the winter paralympic games and they were not mentioned. She gold medaled in the 2012 summer games and will be in Rio in 2016.

Well there was a tie in, after all she went back to Russia to meet her birth family and visit the orphanage where she lived.

I thought the segment was well done.

She is also going to be a ""featured commentator"" during the Paralympic games coming up in Sochi next week.

Let's give the games back to ABC - IF they don't splice and dice the figure skating gala!!!

Re: Thanks for the Ice Skating Gala program you promoted, NBC

I was just going to say beach-mom that I wish ABC would get the Olympics back. They always did such a good job.

Part of the problem I think is that there are just too many sports and too many that look exactly the same to those who are not super involved. I mean how many snowboarding and ski/boarding (my word) can you watch? And loooonnnnggggg segments with cross country skiing. Like watching paint dry.

Come on NBC! Shape up for the next one!
