Re: Texting as communication

Everyone I know except for my older relatives, primarily texts which I prefer. If someone calls me out of the blue, I assume it's an emergency. Even before texting I never felt that I was obligated to answer a call or the doorbell.

I do talk on the phone with my friends to catch up but we usually arranged a time when we're both available.

I prefer to hear the callers voice and tone, it's easier for me to determine the context than the written word.

If someone is too busy to speak to me, then they should be too busy to text me.

Just my personal opinion.

Boy I agree 100%.   I live alone, an elderly and want to hear a voice from family.  I hate texting

I was not aware that the person sending the text would know when the person receiving the text actually read the text.

As you can tell, I am not a texter, but I do have MESSAGES on my MacBook and it shows when my message is delivered but I don't know if the message was read or not.  I am just curious.

I'm not @I am still oxox , but when with iOS, a message is "delivered" when the recipient's phone has received the message.

A message is "read" when the message has been opened.

Technically though, even though someone may have opened the message you can't tell if they actually read the message.

Not unless THEIR phone is set that way. My iPhone would show others that I have read their message if I hadn’t gone to my settings and disengaged that. I don’t want people to know when I’ve read their message. But I have a couple people who I text with where I can see when they’ve read my message. Instead of Delivered, it says Read, and what time.

Whoops @geezerette. It looks like I’m counteracting with you when I’m adding on. But I don’t understand opening a text but not actually reading it?

You're exactly right.  I should have included that in my explanation.

Thank you for the clarification.👍

Well, it's possible to open a text box, either purposely or by accident, and not actually take the time and attention to read it.  I've done it.  Especially with texts from companies.  I'm not really paying full attention to every word of what it says and may quickly move on to another text.  Sort of like sending someone a letter.  They might open it and set it aside and never read it.

I was just trying to say that in reality, there isn't a way to insure someone has actually read your entire text.  If you can get my drift. 🤨🙂

Re: Texting as communication

I have always had the "read" turned off.  It is none of their business.

If I had a friend that demanded instant responses, I would drop them as a friend.

The grandkid's homework pencils are in an old cup printed with "Let me drop everything and work on your problem".  A good lesson for life.
