Teachers: I have two grandchildren I have not seen much and are now coming to my house with my son on week-ends. I'm new at this.
One grandson is in kindergarten and the granddaughter is in the first grade after being held back last year. I want to help these kids learn to read well. (I was an avid reader) and want them to enjoy reading and good books. First things first....I promised the kids we would "play school" when they come to visit.
The child in kindergarten will be fairly easy. I'll get flash cards to teach him his letters. ABC's... The first grader I plan to buy flash cards with words on them and teach her to sound the words out. Is there a better plan for her? Is sounding out the words still appropriate these days? That is how they taught in my day, but that was....well, a long time ago.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.
