This has never happened to me with QVC but twice within a month I've been charged sales tax for clothing items on SHQ.   The first time I emailed them about it, they finally replied and said that had been a mistake, as there is no sales tax on clothes in my state.   Well, it just happened again, and after two emails to them about it, still no reply.   Just a heads up that if you order things from them that are tax-exempt in your state, double check your order information to see if you have indeed been charged tax.

Re: Tax on Non-taxable Items

I refuse to buy supplemnents from SHQ, for same reason, we dont pay tax on health products like that here in MD, they refused to credit me so i said never again. they told me to take it up with my state government.

I think you don't pay tax if the site does not have a brick and mortar store in your state. Otherwise, you pay tax. I like LLBean..no tax since none of their stores are here.

Re: Tax on Non-taxable Items

When we lived in New Mexico, we had to pay tax on literally everything, including prescription medicine. I don't know if has changed, but it was a lot added to the end of the grocery store receipt.

From what I gather there is a lot of tax on things.  I thought the US as a whole didn't tax medications.  I guess I was wrong about that, as NM does tax medications.  There are no taxes for meds in my state.  Now, of course, it could be baked into the actual cost, but as a rule of thumb we don't pay sales tax on medicine.  NM does.

There's an older thread about this same issue. Each state has a bureau that deals with taxes as does each county and city. Try getting the state bureau on the phone to find out how to report this. There might be some federal way to report them too. In the previous post, posters brought up taxes they were charged for items that were non taxable in their area. There have been revisions as to what is currently taxable in many places, but there seems to be an on going issue with taxes on items that are not taxable where the customer lives. Here in Florida, the state department in charge is called The Florida Department of Revenue.

Re: Tax on Non-taxable Items

They seem to struggle with this, which is rather odd.  As already stated, each state has it's own state sales tax laws and you'd think that would be built into their system.

However, a number of years ago, I was buying a *food item from them and they added tax.  I called in to see how I could make the order properly, without the sales tax.  They just told me to order it and then get an adjustment after the fact.  I declined that.

*In my state, food is only taxed when it is 'prepared and served', such as in a restaurant including fast food.   Otherwise, when you purchase a food item it is not taxable.

I don't know for sure if they ever straightened that out but it does seem (near as I can recall) that I had ordered a food item since that time and they got it right.  I haven't ordered anything from them in ages, though.  Back in the ValueVision days, they had THE best fine jewelry of any tv retailer and I have lots of jewelry and gemstones I got there.
