I still will write checks at the grocery store. I don’t want to put food on a credit card. Too bad if it holds up the line. Deal with it.

@Puppy Lips.  I use a debit card for any purchase where I would in the past have used cash.  It comes right out of my bank account.  I have credit cards but rarely use them.  My debit card has the same protection as a credit card would.

@Kachina624 I know they say that debit cards have the same protection as credit cards, but I find that hard to believe.  If your debit card is stolen, and the their uses it, the money is taken out of your account.  Not so with a credit card.  Am I wrong?

@Puppy Lips.  The banks have safeguards that make that highly unlikely.  The bank has a monetary replacement guarantee.  As soon as someone else tries to use the card for as little as $1., an alarm is triggered.

Re: Target to stop taking paper checks

I can't remember the last time I saw anyone pay by check at a store or the last time I wrote a check at the store.

One more way in which the criminals get a say in what we have to put up with. There are so many people who write bad checks, without thinking twice, and we the consumers have to pay. I've not written paper checks in a long time but don't like that they won't allow them.

Surprising since any time someone uses a credit card that company charges the store a percentage of the sale.

I don't write checks at retail anymore and I know most people don't. But I think about the senior citizens who still write checks and I don't mind one bit waiting behind them. I feel bad for all those older people who won't be able to shop at Target anymore. I know this would have been a sad day for my Mom as that was her favorite store!

@speedy girl

Target isn't preventing them from coming in and shopping .... just a slight change how anyone pays for the merchandise.

Honestly, I think most people can figure out how to pay for things in either cash ... or debit/credit cards.  It's not rocket science and old people aren't stupid!

I also have absolutely no idea why an "older person" would no longer be able to shop at Target.  That seems like a pretty absurd, unfathomable statement (to me!)  Older people now can't shop at Target???  That's kinda insulting to "old people."

Every "older person" that I know (however you may define that) is capable of making a purchase with a debit card, credit card and even cash.   Some of those are easier and smoother and more problem-free than writing out a paper check at the register.

They used to have check cashing machines right there at the register. Why can't they still do that? I pay cash for everything. Even my condo.

To me, a check is as good as money/cash.  I pay my bills with checks and haven't had ay issues with them beig refused.

I don't ever remember paying for anything by check when I shop. Occasional check in the mail but mostly debit/credit cards or cash. When I think of it I do remember my mother as an elderly woman wanting to pay by check or cash. It took her a while to use a debit card or credit card with my assistance.
