I still will write checks at the grocery store. I don’t want to put food on a credit card. Too bad if it holds up the line. Deal with it.

@Puppy Lips.  I use a debit card for any purchase where I would in the past have used cash.  It comes right out of my bank account.  I have credit cards but rarely use them.  My debit card has the same protection as a credit card would.

Re: Target to stop taking paper checks

I have had to call two customers in the past two months because they didn't fill out their check properly. If you don't know how to write one or which line is which, stop. It's a PITA for us on the receiving end and you have to hope the person is an honest one and makes good after the fact. Bravo Target. Most of the young kids ringing you up these days don't even know what a check should look like so it gets through.

There is no reason for anyone to write a check in a retail line in 2024. Not to mention the PITA of writing out the deposit slip or scanning them all into the bank which doesn't go smoothly due to handwriting so you're double doing and may as well just do a manual slip.

If you survived the pandemic, I guarantee you did it without writing a check and also had an email for home delivery. 2020 was my breaking point in accommodating my fellow GenXers and Boomers who want to cling to paper. Get with it already.

Learning can be scary, but well worth the convenience. Try it. You'll probably like it. Most people in society now can't be that wrong.

@mormel20.  I bet they'll take a check when someone sends one in to pay their bill.

@Kachina624

I doubt it. If an idiot decides to do that after being a clearly warned that checks will not be an acceptable form of payment, then I guess they will just be dinged for a late payment to their credit report and suffer the financial consequences for being stubborn.

Re: Target to stop taking paper checks

Just had a memory pop up in this old brain of mine when someone mentioned people didn't even know how to write a check nowadays. My first real job when I was still in high school was in the bookkeeping dept of a local bank. One of my jobs was to look at every check that came through before posting to the customer's account and make sure it was filled out correctly, the date was not stale, and that the signature was correct! It was pretty easy once we learned a customer's signature and we could move swiftly. Since banking has moved to computer handling, I've even had checks come through on some business accounts that I've handled that didn't even have a signature! On checking with the bank, those things are no longer looked at and a check isn't even handled in banks now.

@Laura14

My bank eliminated deposit and withdrawal slips about three years ago. When I need cash or make a deposit, I use my debit card at the teller window. I insert my card and pin in the terminal and then tell them if I want to make a withdrawal or deposit.

But 99% of my deposits are made online.

Re: Target to stop taking paper checks

I hate writing checks. WHY???? It's so much easier with debit/credit cards or cash, although I am starting to wonder how much longer that will be an acceptable form of payment.

My aunt passed last year and I am the Trustee of her Estate. She was gifting her 2021 Tesla, with the stipulation that it be paid off, before gifting to the recipient. I was unable to wire the payoff balance which would have been my preference. (Sigh) I had to write a darn check for over $10,000, which of course never made it to the credit union. I then had to stop payment on that check. Write another check to the credit union and mail it, making sure this time to send it certified. In a few months I have to make sure to put another stop payment on that same check, because stop payments are only good for six months. (Grrrrr....).

Does QVC still take checks?

I remember some posters saying that they would put an item on check-hold when they weren’t even sure if they wanted to make the purchase. 🫤

For decades I have always paid my bills by check.  Even DURING the pandemic.

I used my LANDLINE phone to CALL IN my "food" deliveries.  As long as you wore a mask for "no contact" delivery, you were set to go!

Re: Target to stop taking paper checks

@deeva We're a business so we still do have regular deposit slips for the cash drops. I am awaiting the day they eliminate cash and paper so no bank trips period! 🙏

Re: Target to stop taking paper checks

I have a feeling this is to cut down on cost, rather than a way to weed out fraud. Target uses a bank somewhere to make their daily deposits. The bank probably charges for every check on deposit,plus a fee for counting the enormous amount of cash they take in every day.

Since checks are now scanned and imaged and sent electronically to the bank (and the paper check destroyed), Target must have to pay someone to scan, balance, transmit and destroy those checks. It's a labor intensive job. If they cut out checks, they eliminate having to pay employees to deal with them.

Isn't there some way they can key in the checking account info electronically? I remember having that done many many years ago.......and then they handed me back my check.

After my father died, my mother started using her credit card to pay everything......because she couldn't figure out how to balance the checkbook.

Yeah, that's what happens when I pay with check at Wal-Mart.  Info is put on it elec. and cashier hands me back the check. Of course it takes longer as have to scan my ID, get my phone no., etc. so people behind me aren't happy.
