Frankly I've been surprised that stores take paper checks at all. You can use a debit card and the money is taken out of your account in the same way. It just seems like there's too much fraud for a store to take a piece of paper as payment and hope that the funds will be in the account when the check clears.

It is also concerning when there is a breach I remember Target having some type of issue with the debit cards.

@sunshine 919

I have nothing against people writing checks out to pay for their groceries, etc., and I agree with you, if you know you're going to pay by check at least have everything filled out except for the amount to save time and have a little courtesy for the people behind you.

I have had to call two customers in the past two months because they didn't fill out their check properly. If you don't know how to write one or which line is which, stop. It's a PITA for us on the receiving end and you have to hope the person is an honest one and makes good after the fact. Bravo Target. Most of the young kids ringing you up these days don't even know what a check should look like so it gets through.

There is no reason for anyone to write a check in a retail line in 2024. Not to mention the PITA of writing out the deposit slip or scanning them all into the bank which doesn't go smoothly due to handwriting so you're double doing and may as well just do a manual slip.

If you survived the pandemic, I guarantee you did it without writing a check and also had an email for home delivery. 2020 was my breaking point in accommodating my fellow GenXers and Boomers who want to cling to paper. Get with it already.

Learning can be scary, but well worth the convenience. Try it. You'll probably like it. Most people in society now can't be that wrong.

@Laura14   I can't believe there are a lot of GenXers clinging on to writing checks.

One more way in which the criminals get a say in what we have to put up with. There are so many people who write bad checks, without thinking twice, and we the consumers have to pay. I've not written paper checks in a long time but don't like that they won't allow them.

However there are skimmers on some of the card machines.  I hate when they take away choices.  I always try to have cash.  I guess eventually their may be an issue with that.  I have a friend who is all about technology.  She uses apple pay etc... I asked her if she ever gets nervous about doing everything electronically she said no.

There is a huge problem with MONEY LAUNDERING in this country and some of the "odd" banking changes can be linked to dealing with that.

When I sold insurance, we had a mandatory requirement to take a Continuing Ed course on money laundering every year.   If you didn't take the class, your license was suspended until you completed it.

Just FYI ...........   When people routinely use cash when other forms of payment are the norm, it doesn't go unnoticed.

What is norm is different for different people.  One of my favorite take out restaurants charges 3  percent to use a card so obviously people pay with cash.  I wonder if it doesn't go unnoticed when people are charged to use their cards.

@Laura14   -  GenX here.  I still get hardcopy bills and write checks to pay.  My husband, also GenX, wants nothing to do with home accounting.  I've tried.  He just doesn't.  If anything happened to me he wouldn't know what to do if things didn't come hardcopy.

They used to have check cashing machines right there at the register. Why can't they still do that? I pay cash for everything. Even my condo.

@frenchie I hope you literally did not take actual cash to the closing table.  That would not have been a smart thing to do.

I consider a check as cash vs. a card don't you? Yes we paid with a bank check. I didn't have $300k on me.

Re: Target to stop taking paper checks

Target is NOT the best when it comes to the price marked at the shelves and then what is charged at the register. Mainly it is USUALLY on their side.
I can't tell you how often I go over the receipt before leaving the store and catch something. That I have been charged 2/3/4/5 dollars more. Then I go with a Target rep and they see that it is marked at a lower price.

The way of the world.  Like most things today, things are changed and you don't have a say in it.  I get tired of having to do things their way and not mine. I told DH ages ago that one day soon you won't be able to write checks for anything.  They will force you to use ccs or debit.  Target is getting rather picky about different things.  I guess business is so good there that they don't need to worry about what the customer wants.

I found the article I'd mentioned upthread.

It's at betterreport dot com. and the title is:
