Re: Target to stop taking paper checks

@Kachina624  they are talking about paying at the register this does not apply to your cc bill.  It's only in store checking out.  😊 You can still mail in your cc payment.

I don't write checks at retail anymore and I know most people don't. But I think about the senior citizens who still write checks and I don't mind one bit waiting behind them. I feel bad for all those older people who won't be able to shop at Target anymore. I know this would have been a sad day for my Mom as that was her favorite store!

@speedy girl  I'm 76 so I guess I'm a senior citizen.  I have always paid with a credit card. I use a checkbook to pay some of our bills that we get in the mail. Husband pays other online with cc. Not every old person is helpless. Seniors who don't have cc or dc may just stop shopping st stores that require them.

Re: Target to stop taking paper checks

I stopped shopping Target a few years ago.

Retailers who make it difficult for customers to shop will make poor decisions and loose their customer base. With so many choices of where to shop, they need me more than I need them, so it was easy to stop shopping with them.

I don't get  the loathing of Target.  Less than 1% of customers use a paper check at the checkout register.  That's not much of a great loss.  Under  1% of register is not that meaningful,  overall.  Smart business move.

Good move Target!  Very wise and helpful all around.  I applaud you!

Go Target! Go Target!

GO TARGET!  It's 2024!

I love Target. And I use my Target Red Credit Card and get 5% off every transaction there.

I love shopping at Target, I have for several years.  Especially their household items; in store and online I get fabulous buys there.

When I was a super-impoverished grad student living precariously in NYC (the only time I ever asked for permission to cash a check--it was only for 5$) the store, Zabar's, from seeing me there often, trusted me and cashed the check.  It was over a holiday weekend and the bank was closed.  I think I needed the $$ for tokens to get me to and from a meeting.

To this day, I love that store.  Money was super tight that year with me, and $5 was enough for a week.

They used to have check cashing machines right there at the register. Why can't they still do that? I pay cash for everything. Even my condo.

@frenchie

What is a check cashing machine?  I've been shopping for many years and don't recall anything like that at the register.

To me, a check is as good as money/cash.  I pay my bills with checks and haven't had ay issues with them beig refused.

Fraud is up astronomically with checks.  You might be able to still pay with checks, but it's MUCH easier to wash or copy the bar codes, etc and suddenly, out of nowhere, your bank account has been cleaned out.

It's much more risky than in the past.

That's why there are articles popping up about why you should stop paying with checks.

Obviously, you can shop anywhere you want.  Your choice.

However, I think you missed the point.  They aren't making it "more difficult" to shop.  They are making it SAFER to shop.

People who still want to use checks to pay at checkout clearly have no idea what's been going on with fraud the past few years.
