Re: Target to stop taking paper checks

[ Edited ]

I always use my card with a nice cash reward when buying groceries.

Within a few days the rewards are posted and I log into my account to pay the bill. I never even wait for the end of a billing cycle or statement to be posted.

Just like using cash-as-you-go, but with a nice reward.

@THEY CallMe Mr Wilkes - Discover card 5% cash back on groceries this quarter.

Re: Target to stop taking paper checks

Isn't there some way they can key in the checking account info electronically? I remember having that done many many years ago.......and then they handed me back my check.

After my father died, my mother started using her credit card to pay everything......because she couldn't figure out how to balance the checkbook.

Re: Target to stop taking paper checks

been decades since i wrote checks for groceries even though i had credit cards. remember getting the check courtesy cards from all the stores we used for check approvals. was it Tele-Check?  you applied at the service desk and they had a crank camera which took your pic.   i admit that when we were kids starting out we had no CC and forgot to bring the checkbook to the grocery store once or twice . one of us had to drive home to grab it.

@mormel20.  I bet they'll take a check when someone sends one in to pay their bill.

Re: Target to stop taking paper checks

I have never written a check at a store in my life. I used to get silently annoyed at the grocery store if I was behind someone who wrote a check because they took forever.

Re: Target to stop taking paper checks

I still write a few checks, mostly church and the Credit Union.  I can't be sure how long it takes to transfer funds from checking to the Credit Union, so I prefer to pay them with a check.  But, I still carry the checkbook around with me.  It came in handy the other day when I was at the alterations shop and the lady said 3% charge for cards.  I didn't have the cash on hand, but then she said no charge for checks, so I saved that 3%.

I wonder if Target will start adding that credit card fee in for purchases using a card.  It seems to be more and more a thing with retailers.

Re: Target to stop taking paper checks

Frankly I've been surprised that stores take paper checks at all. You can use a debit card and the money is taken out of your account in the same way. It just seems like there's too much fraud for a store to take a piece of paper as payment and hope that the funds will be in the account when the check clears.

Does QVC still take checks?

I remember some posters saying that they would put an item on check-hold when they weren’t even sure if they wanted to make the purchase. 🫤
