Re: Taking Vacation to North Carolina...Need Suggestions

If you have the time, one of the most fun and informative things that we did in Asheville, is to take the LaZoom Tour. It's a big, purple bus that takes you all over the city. It's theater and history all combined into one experience. The operators dress in crazy costumes and interact with other actors on the streets. The "little known facts" are what they special in. It would be fun for adults and kids alike.

The Red Rocker Inn, in Black Mountain, NC( about 5 miles from Asheville) is a nice place to stay that was featured in Southern Living Magazine. They are known for their dining  experience. It is an older Bed and Breakfast, but a very nice place to stay.

The Asheville area is a nicely located area for so many places to go and things to do. But it's not near the beach, if that's what you're leaning toward. I vote the mountains, if I get a vote!

Asheville and the surrounding mountain areas are not good in the winter. The traveling is slow and dangerous.  You are better off in Indiana.  The Asheville area has snow often. Go toward the lower levels of NC or SC or the coast and the winter weather is so much milder.

Took a short cut to the Cherokee Casino and ended up on it. Had to buy a shirt since we survived.

Re: Taking Vacation to North Carolina...Need Suggestions

You have received some wonderful suggestions.  If the prices are discounted, The Biltmore Hotel is a grand place to stay.  There are also many nice B & B's in the mountains.

I have no idea how long you plan to vacation but if you have time, Myrtle Beach is really nice and the water is really nice near the end of September.  Also, don't forget Charleston SC as a possibility.  Have no idea how I have gotten you to the East Coast but maybe that can be another trip someday   Blowing Rock NC is one of our fav places.  Very artistic people, great shopping for unique items, a great restaurant called Six Pence and a great ice cream shop.   As the saying goes, many people that visit Asheville never leave which is why so many stars have homes there.  Sounds like a fun time where ever you end up!Smiley Happy

Please stay out of the ocean - so many shark attacks along the Carolina coast this year.  Well, I suppose wading in ankle-deep water would be okay.

You've gotten some great advice.  You'll want to see Blowing Rock, and The Chetola Lodge, Chetola is absolutely beautiful, great views, spa, food, etc, unfortunately quite pricey. However, going for lunch, or a drink on the outdoor deck is nice.

Google waterfalls in North Carolina because we have some beautiful ones, and as mentioned the Blue Ridge Parkway is not to be missed.  Also, Grandfather Mountain, Valley Crusis, and some amazing juried craft galleries off the Parkway.

One thing I'm not clear about, are you coming in the winter? Remember, Mt. Mitchell, the highest mountain on the east coast, is here and the winter months in the NC mountains are not nearly as mild as people think - they can be pretty harsh, cold, snowy, icy, and long.

You did receive a lot of good suggestions re: what to see in the Asheville area. We are in the Hendersonville area..south of Asheville. Moved here 27 yrs ago from Michigan. I would NOT visit this area in the winter time. The roads can be very bad and we can get snow and freezing temperatures.

I had no idea Asheville had snow and ice in the winter.  That is good to know.  I need to get some reservations in for the Fall.   Our daughter lived in Laurenburg for several years.  I think it is only about 3 hrs. from Myrtle Beach.  We never got to the beach.  I read all your suggestions to DH last night and he was very interested.  I told him you girls were full of information and would come through with some good ideas.  He is impressed!!!!  Thanks to everyone.

I edited this to say.....you don't have to worry about sharks.  I will never be in the ocean!!  While I would love to be around the ocean....I never want to be in it !!!
